Wisconsin Dental Mercury Pollution Prevention Program

About Us

The Wisconsin Dental Mercury Pollution Prevention Program is partnership among the Wisconsin DNR, UW-Extension, Wisconsin Dental Association and member components, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District (MMSD), and other publicly owned wastewater treatment works.

Some of our key activities are:Dental Graphic

  • Identification of key problems and issues
    • Led to the 1996 publication of a P2 Guide for Dentist
  • Development and promotion of best management practices
    • Survey
    • Publication of Recycling Amalgam Waste
  • Educational seminars at state wide meetings and component gatherings
  • Pilot amalgam separator project in Milwaukee

Key Web Resources for Amalgam Recovery:

  • The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the Washington State Dental Association (WSDA) are collaborating to help dental offices properly control dental office wastes by implementing updated Best Management Practices by August 2005.

Includes links to the Amalgam Recovery handbook and features of approved amalgam separators list.

  • Developed by the New England Waste Management Officials Association, and includes specific pollution prevention opportunities, and best management practices for dental offices.
