Coordinated Master of Science in Health Care Informatics and Master of Library and Information Science

The tremendous and continuous growth in medical literature has placed significant pressure on health care practitioners to assimilate information in an efficient and practical way. Seeking, sorting and applying this knowledge is especially challenging with the emphasis on cost-effective, high-quality care using evidencebased rules to reduce medical errors.

In the health care industry this wealth of knowledge, coupled with the dramatic introduction of information technology, has focused attention on the skills and knowledge of people needed to support the translation of knowledge into clinical care.

This coordinated degree program is offered cooperatively between the College of Health
Sciences (CHS), Health Care Informatics Program and the School of Information Studies
(SOIS).

The goal of the Program is to prepare Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) students for careers in health care informatics, and be able to assume roles as clinical informationists.

For the M.S. Health Care Informatics (HCI) students, the coordinated degree program will introduce a new content area that is vital to the health care community. The HCI students will, in addition, develop the skills to access and synthesize the large amount of scientific
knowledge necessary to support clinical care.

The program will provide students with tangible competencies, including the ability to:

1. Understand medical science and terminology at
   an appropriate level for managing healthcare
   information systems.
2. Analyze administrative information systems within
   health care institutional environments.
3. Identify, analyze and interpret ethical and
   information policy issues connected with health
   care information systems and associated
   individuals.
4. Evaluate and apply appropriate information systems,
   classifi cation systems, information retrieval systems
   and related support literature within health care
   environments.
5. Identify, retrieve, organize, store, repackage and
   share relevant institutional, administrative, patient,
   and other health care-related information.
   

Graduates of the program will be qualifi ed to be employed as clinical informationists in hospitals, clinics, university medical centers and medical research centers. The clinical informationist can participate in clinical rounds, among other professional responsibilities in health care settings.

The Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) component of the coordinated program includes 27 credits of SOIS courses. These include 4 core courses (12 credits) and 5 electives (15 credits), chosen to complement the other courses in the coordinated program and in accordance with individual student goals.

The Master of Science in Health Care Informatics component of the coordinated program includes 29 credits spread over nine content areas culminating in a thesis or project.
