UW-System Digitization Guidelines

The Guidelines, Laws, and Policies page has been updated with a link to the UW
Records Officers Council Digitization Guidelines. These guidelines are intended
to provide recommendations for technical specifications, cost-benefit analysis,
and access and preservation needs of digitization systems. Any department or
office planning to digitize their records for preservation or access is strongly
encouraged to peruse these guidelines before doing so.

General Records Schedules for Business Communication, Personnel Records

The General Records Schedules page has been updated with two new UW-System-wide
schedules, for business communications and unclassified staff personnel records.
The business communications schedule provides guidance to all employees for
managing emails, text messages, voicemail, and other forms of electronic
communication. The unclassified staff personnel records schedule provides
guidance on many kinds of personnel-related records, including the Official
P-File, tenure files, I-9 forms, and even course evaluations, and should be read
by any University employee who deals with official or unofficial copies of these
records. Watch for a seminar on interpreting the personnel records schedule in
                    mid-January.

New RRDAs, Education Page updates, Upcoming Seminars, Submission Deadline

A note to all units looking to schedule their records that the submission
deadline for new Records Description Worksheets will be June 13,
2008, after which point they must go to internal audit for approval.
Please contact the records officer or submit your worksheet before that date if
                    possible.

Ten new Records Retention and Disposition Authorities were recently approved by
the Public Records Board, in the Office of Student Life and the Department of
Sports Medicine. As always, copies of schedules are available on request.

Finally, watch this space for the date for the next RM seminar, dealing with
managing email under the new PantherLink client, sometime in mid-July.

Welcome to the site!

A new look for a new year! Welcome to the new UWM Records Management
website. We have tried to make navigation around the site more intuitive, to answer
some frequently asked questions about Records Management, and while we're at it, to
make the site a little prettier, as well. Comments about the redesign, or about what
else you'd like to see on this site, are always welcome.

Electronic Records Management Seminar, 1/16/08

Start the new year off right by cleaning out your electronic files! This
first in a series of workshops on special records management topics will discuss the
nature of and proper management of electronic records, which may include emails,
word documents, spreadsheets, electronic forms, databases, and even instant
messages. Participants will learn how to identify e-records, how to manage and
distribute them properly using campus resources, and how to either prepare them for
transfer to the archives or dispose of them in a timely and appropriate manner.

Library, will introduce you to Records Management at UWM: What it is, how it is
