Introduction
In honor of the 40th Anniversary celebration for the UWM School of
Architecture and Urban Planning, SARUP alumni involved in brainstorming and
planning anniversary events wanted to provide for the School's future in a
meaningful way. Dean Greenstreet suggested that alumni encourage anniversary
year gifts in support of the STAR Fund.
The purpose of the STAR Fund is to assist the UWM School of Architecture and
Urban Planning in attracting and retaining the most highly qualified and
diverse students in SARUP's degree programs. The STAR Fund Awards provide a
mechanism for SARUP to maintain and enhance a competitive profile in
attracting the best and the brightest students.
Process
In order to be considered for a graduate program STAR Fund Award, the student must show evidence to the SARUP Dean of an offer of admission into a top architecture school Master's in Architecture program. Available funding may also provide for STAR Fund Awards to be presented to top level undergraduate students and doctoral students. The Dean will determine award recipients and award value, in coordination with appropriate faculty and/or academic advisors, based on the student's academic record, need and design merit.
Funding
Currently the School of Architecture and Urban Planning has received a
number of gift commitments to initiate the STAR Fund. A goal of securing
gifts that will build a fund of $200,000 during the anniversary year has
been established. This fund would then have the capacity to support 40 new
STAR Fund Scholarships in honor of the 40th Anniversary.
Although gifts at all levels are accepted for the STAR Fund, we encourage
donor consideration of a multi-year pledge ranging from the 5 for 5
Leadership level, through a commitment of $5,000 per year for five years,
down to the Chancellor's Society level of $1,000 per year over five years.
Several SARUP alumni have already stepped forward with gift commitments at
both the Leadership and the Chancellor Society levels.
STAR Fund Program
The first STAR Fund Awards were presented in May 2007 to two first year SARUP graduate students. These first two awards assisted in retaining a talented alum from the SARUP BSAS program and in attracting an equally talented individual from Texas to the SARUP MArch program. In May 2008 a third STAR Fund Scholarship award was presented.
