 form with their application.

Financial Assistance                                             APPLICATION DEADLINE:  VARIES
Various financial assistance opportunities are available through the Ph.D. Program Committee, the Department of Architecture, the UWM Graduate School, the UWM Financial Aid Office, and external agencies.  Support may take the form of teaching, project or research assistantships, fellowships, loans, or work-study programs.  Most financial assistance is awarded on the basis of academic merit.  When an award is made by the Ph.D. Program Committee, it is normally for a two-year term.  Every effort is made to provide assistance to both incoming and continuing students.  However, while it has been possible in past years to respond to the needs of the majority of students who request support, it must be recognized that funding sources are limited and vary from year to year.

Departmental Teaching Assistantships and Project Assistantships
The Department of Architecture offers a few graduate Teaching and Project Assistantships
each year.  Teaching Assistants (TAs) are assigned to undergraduate lecture or studio courses while Project Assistants (PAs) work on departmental research and administrative projects.  Applicants are selected based on overall academic achievement, previous education and experience, and departmental needs.  TAs and PAs are usually appointed for a nine-month renewable contract at 33% (13.3 hours/week) and receive a stipend in addition to tuition remission (does not include tuition
fees).  Stipend amounts for the current year can be found here and should increase slightly each academic year.  All TAs and PAs become due-paying members of the MGAA as part of their contract.  New students accept TA/PA appointments with the understanding that contracts will be renewed for a second year provided academic progress and TA/PA performances are satisfactory.  After a student's second year in the program, appointments are made only when available.  Semester appointments are also available depending on departmental needs.  Semester appointments are not automatically renewable, but students may then reapply for regular TA or PA positions.

Other Project Assistantships
The School of Architecture and Urban Planning also houses the Center for Architecture and Urban Planning Research (CAUPR), which administers several projects each year. Other research projects may be underway from time to time in the School as well.

Project Assistantships are offered through faculty members responsible for each project.  Awards are based on academic merit, previous education and experience, and project needs.  The number of positions and period of appointment vary.  Openings for these appointments are posted in the School.

UWM Graduate School Fellowships
The UWM Graduate School offers a number of university-wide fellowships and works in cooperation with national agencies and foundations in aiding students to apply for national scholarships.  Some can be applied for while others are by nomination from the Department of Architecture

Fourteen UWM Graduate School Fellowships are awarded per year based on outstanding academic achievement and are highly competitive. Applications and details are available from the Graduate School in early November.  The application deadline is in mid-January.

Advanced Opportunity Program Fellowships
This graduate fellowship program enables a greater number of financially needy minority persons (African-American, Hispanic, American Indian and Southeast Asian) or disadvantaged persons to enter graduate programs or continue graduate study on a full-time basis at UWM.  Applicants must be  U.S. citizens or possess permanent visas.  Students are nominated by the Department for these fellowships.  Applications are available from the Graduate School in early November and the application deadline is in early February.

National Scholarships
The Department of Architecture assists students in identifying and applying to various fellowships and scholarships for graduate students, including the American Association for University Women Fellowships, HUD Doctoral Research Grants, and other pre-dissertation and dissertation grants.  Some awards are based on academic merit while others are based on both merit and financial need.  Application deadlines vary.

Students may be eligible for work-study employment and loans.  For more information and applications, contact the UWM Financial Aid Office.

Finally, a number of students work part-time for local architectural firms, other organizations, or  faculty on a periodic basis.  Although it is difficult for an average full-time student to also work  part-time, some students may, if the work is related to their studies, find the experience of significant educational and professional value.
