Master's Programs Application Process

Application Deadlines:

M.Arch Program:                January 15 (summer/fall admission);

                                          3-1/2 year   applicants apply for summer

M.Arch/MUP Program:        January 15 (summer/fall admission);

                                          4-1/2 year applicants apply for summer

MUP Program:                   March 1 (fall admission), October 1 (spring admission)

 

The Graduate School recommends that you begin the application process one year before the semester you plan to start.

 

Application and Fee: Submit to UWM Graduate School

Complete the UWM Graduate School application form on-line at:   http://apply.wisconsin.edu. Applicants to coordinated degree programs submit only one application and fee. For MPA/MUP and MS/MUP applicants, additional required materials must be submitted to each program.

 

Transcripts: Submit to UWM Graduate School

One official transcript sent directly to the Graduate School from each undergraduate and graduate school attended. If you attended UWM as an undergraduate, the Graduate School will obtain transcripts from the UWM Undergraduate Records Office.

 

Academic record requirements:

2 yr M.Arch and 3 yr M.Arch/MUP: A bachelor’s degree in architectural studies (or equivalent), a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale), and completion of at least five undergraduate design studios.

3-1/2 yr M.Arch and 4-1/2 yr M.Arch/MUP: A bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale).

MUP: A bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (4.0 scale).

 

Reasons Statement: Submit to UWM Graduate School

Rationale for graduate study and pursuit of a professional degree. This may include strengths you bring to graduate study in architecture and/or urban planning at UWM, areas of particular interest, and long-range career goals. Address why you are interested in becoming a professional architect and/or planner, your expectations of the program, and any details in your personal history or background which are relevant to your interest in professional architecture or urban planning.

 

Graduate Record Exam (GRE): General Test

Make arrangements to have your GRE results sent to the UWM Graduate School (Institution Code: R1473) and the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (Department Codes: 4401 for M.Arch and M.Arch/MUP; 4402 for MUP). Allow at least one month for receipt of all scores.Visit the GRE website for more information about registration and preparation: www.gre.org

 

Letters of Recommendation: Submit to UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office

Three letters of recommendation from people familiar with your academic and/or professional work. Letters should be from non-related individuals who know you through previous academic programs or relevant professional activity. Recommendation forms are available online at:

Portfolio: Submit to UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office

Required of all M.Arch and M.Arch/MUP applicants. Format: 8-1/2” x 11” maximum size. Portfolio should be bound with name clearly visible on spine or outside front cover. The department does not examine oversized portfolios, loose or rolled materials, or digital portfolios. If you wish your portfolio returned by mail, include a prepaid, self-addressed envelope (check with your postal service for cost).

International Students:

A minimum TOEFL score of 100 iBT or 600 PBT is required, or a score of 7.0 on the IELTS examination. Additional requirements for international applicants are available at: http://www4.uwm.edu/cie/futurestudents/69/

 

Follow-Up:

Watch for information from the Graduate School on monitoring your application status online. Application status will reflect receipt of items

required by the Graduate School to process your application (application, fee, transcripts and reasons statement). To confirm receipt of additional materials required by the M.Arch or MUP Program, please follow up with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office.
