Ph.D. Program Application Process

 

Application Deadline:

January 1 – Fall admission only

The Graduate School recommends that you begin the application process one year before the semester you plan to start.

 

Application and Fee: Submit to UWM Graduate School

Complete the UWM Graduate School application form on-line at: http://apply.wisconsin.edu.

 

Transcripts: Submit to UWM Graduate School

One official transcript sent directly to the Graduate School from each undergraduate and graduate school attended. Applicants must have a

cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale) and meet one of these departmental requirements to be eligible for consideration for admission to the program:

 

1. A professional B.Arch or M.Arch degree in architecture or a   master's degree in a related environmental professional field.

 

2. A master's degree in any field and significant experience in the practice, research or teaching of architecture or related professional fields.

 

3. A bachelor's degree in any other field. Holders of such degrees will be advanced to full doctoral student status after they have completed

some pre-doctoral preparation in research methods, environmental design research, and/or architectural design and communication,

consonant with their own program of study.

 

Reasons Statement: Submit to UWM Graduate School and School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office

A 2-3 page statement that includes long-term goals, a summary of relevant work completed to date, likely area of concentration, and research interests. Send two copies to the Graduate School and one copy to the School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

 

Graduate Record Exam (GRE): General Test

Make arrangements to have your GRE results sent to the UWM Graduate School (Institution Code: R1473) and the UWM School of Architecture

and Urban Planning (Department Code: 4401). Allow at least one month for receipt of all scores. Visit the GRE website for more information about registration and preparation: www.gre.org

 

Letters of Recommendation: Submit to UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office

Three letters of recommendation from persons in a position to assess your potential for advanced graduate research and, if appropriate, for the various forms of financial aid for which you may be applying. Recommendation forms are available online at:

Portfolio: Submit to UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office

Examples of research, teaching, and/or professional work relevant to advanced graduate research (portfolio of visual work and/or examples

of written work, completed research, etc.). Name should be clearly visible on outside front cover. If you wish your portfolio returned by mail, include a prepaid, self-addressed envelope (check with your postal service for cost).

 

Resume, Curriculum Vitae, or Biographical Statement: Submit to UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office

1-2 pages

 

International Students:

A minimum TOEFL score of 100 iBT or 600 PBT is required, or a score of 7.0 on the IELTS examination. Additional requirements for international applicants are available at: http://www4.uwm.edu/cie/futurestudents/69/

 

Follow-Up:

Watch for information from the Graduate School on monitoring your application status online. Application status will reflect receipt of items

required by the Graduate School to process your application (application, fee, transcripts and reasons statement). To confirm receipt of additional materials required by the PhD Program please follow up with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office.
