| Tammie Xiong is an Associate Outreach Specialist in the Center for Urban Community Development. She works with non-traditional and special education teachers around Wisconsin assisting them in their teacher licensure exams known as the Praxis exams. She has also coordinated and taught Praxis exam prep classes and has worked with WI Department of Public Instruction (DPI) through the SMARTT (Support for Mid-Career Advancement and Retention through Transition-to-Teaching) program to provide Praxis support to teachers across the state. Currently, Ms. Xiong is coordinating the Literacy for Life program, which is a home-based literacy program for newly-arrived refugees and their families within the city of Milwaukee. The program focuses on the literacy needs of low to pre-literate refugee adult learners and is funded through the WI Refugee Impact Grant. Ms. Xiong also coordinates the Summer Refugee Youth Tutoring and Mentoring program that provides reading and writing support for refugee youth during the summer. She works closely with the state, community-based organizations, community leaders, educators, and resettlement agencies in order to provide further support for these refugee communities. She is also coordinating the Refugee Field Work orientation for volunteer tutors and mentors. In addition, Ms. Xiong also helps maintain and manage the Refugee Education and Integration Service Center (REISC) website: http://www4.uwm.edu/reisc/ She has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in English with emphasis in Creative Writing. She also earned her Masters of Science in Administrative Leadership with emphasis in adult education and program planning from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
