| Dr. Rai is a nationally recognized scholar specializing in grassroots education, community building, multicultural communication strategies and participatory action research. She is an assistant professor in UWM Center for Urban Community Development. She has 10 years of community development experience working with Milwaukee's diverse populations. Her research, teaching and outreach activities center on creating opportunities for grassroots residents' involvement in decision making and community problem solving in ways that promote individual and community learning, empowerment and transformation. Dr. Rai is principal investigator for the Hmong National Development grant for the State of Wisconsin, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; principal investigator of the Women of Color Capacity Building Project, funded by the Ford Foundation; and principal investigator of the community-focused Teacher Training Partnership grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Statewide, she actively backs initiatives to better the quality of life for southeast Asian refugee families. Her doctoral degree is from UW-Madison.
