The University of Wisconsin−Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts Department of Music presents the second concert of the season by the UWM Wind Ensemble on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. in the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd.
The program, conducted by UWM Director of Bands John Climer, features Antonin Dvořák’s well-known “Serenade, Op. 44 in D minor” and David Maslanka’s masterwork, “A Child’s Garden of Dreams.” Single tickets are $10 general and $7 for students, seniors, and UWM alumni, faculty and staff. For tickets, phone the Peck School of the Arts Box Office, 414-229-4308.
Antonin Dvořák composed two serenades, one for string orchestra (op. 22) and the wind serenade (op. 44). Music critic and editor Otakar Sourek writes that the “Serenades” “rank among the most characteristic and also the loveliest expressions of Dvořák’s creative spirit.”
Completed in 1981, David Maslanka’s “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” is one of the most significant works composed for wind-band in the last quarter-century. The inspiration for this five-movement composition comes from the book “Man and His Symbols,” by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.
