Although most advisors and advising programs have multi-faceted responsibilities
beyond general academic advising, the responses below focus on the
academic advising commonalities of these units.
What do we value as advisors?
- Assisting students in discovering, processing and determining
their best academic course of action;
- Educating students about academic programs and policies and procedures;
and
- Working together with students toward the attainment of their
academic goals.
What is our vision of advising?
The L&S vision of academic advising is to provide the highest
quality of advising services to all students in a manner consistent
with the principles of advising articulated in the American College
Testing Service (ACT) definition of advising:
“Academic advising is a developmental process, which assists
students in the clarification of their life/career goals and in the
development of educational plans for the realization of these goals.
It is a decision-making process by which students realize their maximum
educational potential through communication and information exchanges
with an advisor; it is ongoing, multifaceted, and the responsibility
of both student and advisor.”
What is our advising program “mission”?
L&S Advising Mission Statement:
To thoroughly and systematically educate students about Letters and
Science academic programs, policies and procedures, and to assist
students in discovering, processing and determining their best academic
course of action. Once academic goals have been established, advisor
and advisee work together toward the attainment of established goals.
