Engagement & Service (Team 5)
Report: Meeting of August 25, 2003

Present: Begun, Burgess, Bell Calvin, Figueroa, Hains, Susan Kelly (for Krueger), Levine, Marks, Mone, Mulroy, Percy, Pick, Prince, Smothers, White

1. Introductions

2. Discussion of issues:

  • Addressing challenge of getting information from all over campus
  • Developing a picture of the reality at UWM
  • What evidence do we want to pursue (e.g., evidence for University support for engagement is release time from teaching or academic staff duties for involvement in a particular activity
  • Milwaukee Idea has done X to impact Y; what were the outcomes Z and what
assessment tools validate and verify what we say we have done? How do
we want to define X,Y, and Z (identify partnerships that exist, and what
they are for/trying to achieve, and a basket of impact measures)
  • To what extent do promotional criteria and standards (academic staff indefinite
and faculty merit/promotion) have criteria for service? How is it figured as part of a person’s portfolio? Fact that it is a component of review, there is University support for it, is support for asking University community to be engaged. It is variable across colleges, departments, divisions, and indefinite status for academic staff—it exists in the criteria—ambiguity in the term “service” (Raising the question could nudge people to pay attention to the issue) Integrity: evaluation of packets/portfolios for promotion/tenure—service is seldom given much weight; in the process of the self-study, we are going to review what it is that we value. Then we need to devise measures and evidence for what we value. Measuring the packets themselves is one way to look at what has historically been done.

3. Next steps:

  • Identify specific format for what we want to ask about in the various colleges
    • —we have many of the archival reports already out there, but how do we
want to assemble it; Milwaukee Idea Action Teams assembled some of
the key info for us; Deans, Associate Deans, chairs, Academic Staff/CAN,
Mke Idea programs/projects—list of faculty & staff to whom they have
awarded grants; Black & Gold Commission—student engagement (Laurie
      Marks); MPS connections report,
  • Assign subcommittee tasks and membership
  • Define engagement & service: Engagement involves what the community is
committing you to do over the long haul

Agenda for next meeting: 7 parts assignment & Holland Matrix, beginning assignments to sub groups
(4 more monthly meetings scheduled during this semester)
