Mission & Integrity Team
1(a) SUBCOMMITTEE PROGRESS AND PROCESS REPORT, 10/6/03
Subcommittee
members Kristie Hamilton, Gabrielle Verdier and Janet
Lilly met 9/26 and 9/29 to review UW system, UW-Milwaukee
and colleges mission statements. Randy Ryder and Janet
Lilly met on 10/6. We used the 6 bullet points in category
1(a) as our criteria for evaluation. Our goal was to assess
congruence between the system, university and colleges
mission statements. Our questions and observations follow:
QUESTIONS
1. How often
are the mission statements revised (bullet point
5)? We noted that many web-sites included a date of the
most recent updating. Are we to assume that at each updating
the mission statement is re-visited and revised?
*Mary Roggeman has provided a booklet published in 1989 of UW System, doctoral campus, and UWM mission statements. They are the same as the ones we have on our website now. So, for the most general level, there has been no change in mission statement since 1989. I do not yet know if the school/college or administrative unit websites have a procedure for amending the mission statements.
2. What criteria
should we use to evaluate the mission statements of administrative
departments such as Administrative Affairs? What is the
correlation between these areas and the mission statements
of the university and colleges that they serve?
*The NCA support staff (Thanks to Laura Pedrick), has gotten most of the major administrative department mission statements up for us. See the website. You should now be able to examine the consider the second question you ask and compare the academic and administrative statements. Do you want to do so?
OBSERVATIONS
The accessibility
(bullet point 6) of mission statements varies widely across
the university. For example, the UW-Milwaukee mission
statement is not readily available on the home page. Very
few of the departments and schools include mission statements
in the printed catalogues, bulletin or handbooks. Furthermore
there are inconsistent locations for the mission statement
within school and department web pages. Some colleges
do not have a mission statement at all. For example, there
is a mission statement for the MA program in Urban Planning
on the Architecture and Urban Planning web page, and nothing
about the undergraduate programs and certificates in Architecture
or Urban Planning. A similar situation exists for Criminal
Justice in the Helen Bader School of Social Work.
A number of
the college mission statements do not clearly define student
learning (bullet point 3) and goals as part of the
mission statement. For example, the PSOA, Civil Engineering
and the School of Education do not clearly address student
learning in the current mission statements.
*See also the spreadsheet in Subcommittee 1(c) on this point.
FUTURE GOALS
Compare university
and college mission statements with representative departments
to assess congruence from the top down. As a group we
need to determine how many departments we should review.
REQUESTS FOR
MARGO
Margo,
if there are mission statements available for Architecture
and Criminal Justice? Any suggestions as to what a representative
number of department mission statements to review (and
once determined we may need access to the department mission
statements)? Could you please request again that I receive
the initial packet of materials?
*One question for the larger group is whether we want to drill down further to mission statements for the subunits of schools and colleges. I would expect that would had 100 or more statements. Do you wish to pursue them, or shall we hold off on that request?
