Assessment at UWM

UWM Assessment Council Charge

UWM is committed to continuous improvement in the fulfillment of its mission. In the spirit of this commitment, Provost and Vice Chancellor Rita Cheng convened a campus-wide UWM Assessment Council to facilitate the continuous quality improvement of curricula and instruction throughout the university through assessment of student outcomes.

The UWM Assessment Council, which will serve in an advisory role to the Provost on matters related to assessment and evaluation, will be asked to:

  • Work with the faculty members in their school and college to identify expected learning outcomes for students.

  • Work with the faculty members in their school and college to design systems of learning assessment by which the faculty will assess students’ achievement of the expected learning outcomes.

  • Provide assistant on the preparation of the learning outcomes section of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) followup report due in spring 2008.

  • Provide assistance to faculty in collecting assessment plan information systematically for inclusion in the NCA report and on an ongoing basis. The university is exploring efficient methods of capturing program-level data, including the use of web-based systems to document implementation of programmatic assessment plans.

  • Provide assistance in the completion of annual accountability reports on the assessment activities and findings of the assessment process of each school and college, including specific details on the use of assessment results in revising and improving programs.

  • Work with the dean of their school or college to develop a presentation as part of the annual school/college budget meetings. Results will also be shared with the Academic Dean’s Council, Associate Deans Network, the Academic Program Planning Committee, and the Graduate Faculty Council.

  • Provide support for systematic campus-wide participation in assessment through workshops, training, and resource development.

The UWM Assessment Council will have a major impact on improving, increasing, and enhancing student learning at UWM.
