Prior to the on-line demonstration of WEAVE, a web-based assessment program developed by the Virginia Commonwealth University (http://www.weaveonline.com/), Associate Vice Chancellor Dev Venugopalan briefly discussed WEAVE and its possible advantages to an institution such as UWM.

This web-based on-line system could assist our academic programs by making assessment record keeping simple and easy-to-use. It would allow for one common process to be used campus-wide, even taking into account the considerable diversity that exists on the UWM campus. It also provides a structure for reports and a mechanism for keeping track of progress in a central repository.

Jean Yerian of Virginia Commonwealth University then moderated an on-line demonstration. She is the Director of Assessment at VCU and a co-developer of WEAVE. Her presentation walked participants through the several components of assessment addressed within the program:
Mission statement
Outcomes/objectives
Measures
Findings
Action plans
Analysis
Annual reporting

She also demonstrated several special features of the program, including the ability to look at learning outcomes not only within a program but also across the institution, the ability to archive data for several years, the ability to transfer forward information easily each year, and the ability to incorporate and receive feedback from internal reviewers or off-site reviewers. Accreditation standards from national professional accrediting agencies can also be entered into the system. In addition, a curricular mapping feature is also available that allows a program to track activities over time. WEAVE is also working on the development of a national rubric bank that it hopes to have available in March 2007 (the same anticipated date for the release of version 4.0 of WEAVE).

An abbreviated on-line demo of this program is available at <http://www.weaveonline.com/>. Go to “View Demo” – upper right hand corner.
