Dear Colleagues,

The Division of Academic Affairs seeks a tenured member of the UWM faculty to direct t he Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL).  The Center is comprised of the integrated units of the Center for Instructional and Professional Development (CIPD) and the Learning Technology Center (LTC).  CETL is made up of thirteen full-time and part-time staff, many of whom are teachers and researchers with advanced degrees in their respective disciplines and with many years of teaching and support experience.  CETL fosters a culture of professional development among faculty, staff, and graduate students in which excellence in teaching in all forms and attention to student learning are understood and pursued as scholarly, intellectual work. CETL provides faculty development and pedagogical consultation, technology training and support (including Desire2Learn) for instructors, and evaluation and research of an array of course delivery modes, including online, blended, and traditional face-to-face. CETL regularly engages with the UWM community to initiate new programs and grant opportunities, to encourage effective and innovative teaching practices that improve student learning, and to collaborate with campus, state, and national initiatives. CETL is also responsible for researching, investigating, piloting, and evaluating emerging technologies intended to facilitate innovative teaching and learning methods. The unit offers workshops, professional development programs, retreats, and individual and departmental consultations to support teaching and learning at UWM.

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will be expected to provide the unit with strategic vision and guidance, build connections with faculty and campus leadership, demonstrate a commitment to Center staff professional development, and foster collaborations within the unit, at UWM, and beyond. The Director will provide on-going collegial, confidential consultation and support to faculty members and graduate students, advise chairs and/or academic deans in matters pertaining to instruction, and initiate, support and review campus initiatives related to instruction. This position will coordinate campus-level faculty and staff professional development as related to teaching and learning at UWM.  The successful candidate will hold a 25% tenured faculty position (at the rank of full or associate professor) in an academic department at UWM (teaching one course per year and continuing disciplinary research) and a 75% appointment as the Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Rank of full or associate professor at UWM;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching ;
  • Well-versed in issues related to effective pedagogical practices (e.g., the scholarship of teaching and learning, educational technologies, digital scholarship, and assessment of student learning);
  • Experience working with faculty and staff from various disciplines and diverse backgrounds;
  • Proven administrative skills, including those related to supervision of professional staff to included hiring, staff evaluations, and professional development ;
  • Experience with developing and managing budgets;


Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of effective teaching and learning in multiple formats;
  • Evidence of research into best practices in teaching and learning in higher education;
  • Evidence of involvement at the institutional and system levels related to initiatives focused on the advancement of teaching and learning;
  • Experience with a variety of perspectives and practices of inquiry into teaching and learning;
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
