The following Honors are granted to Undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee:
Commencement honors are awarded to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.500 or above, based on a minimum of 40 graded UWM credits earned prior to the final semester of enrollment. Students designated with commencement honors are invited to Seniors Honors Convocation by the Secretary of the University's Office and wear the gold cord during commencement exercises.
Currently Departmental honors are only awarded in two schools; the Peck School of the Arts and the School of Education. In Peck School of the Arts the department recommends honors for excellence in performance not reflected in GPA. In the School of Education students in curriculum and instruction must earn a 3.250 GPA for all UWM courses completed prior to the final semester in addition students must receive a positive recommendation from student teaching. Exceptional Education students must earn a 3.500 GPA on at least 60 UW system graded credits in addition to a positive faculty recommendation for student teaching.
Final Degree Honors
Final degree honors are based upon ALL work completed toward the degree and honors maintained and/or earned through the final grading period will be noted on the student's final transcript and on the diploma. To be eligible, students must have earned no fewer than 60 semester credits in residence and honors will be assigned as follows:
- Cum Laude (3.500 or above)
- Magnum Cum Laude (3.650 or above)
- Summa Cum Laude (3.800 or above)
Beginning with students earning degrees in May 2011 or after, the cumulative GPA requirements necessary to receive final honors are standard for all schools/colleges.
High Honors in the Major
High Honors in the Major are granted by two schools. The School of Architecture & Urban Planning and Peck School of the Arts. The requirements for the School of Architecture is a GPA of 3.750 or above in courses in the major and a minimum GPA of 3.500 for the last 60 UWM credits. The requirements for Peck School of the Arts is a cumulative GPA of 3.500
Honors in the Major
Honors in the major is different from all-university honors and signifies that a student has attained a significant level of achievement in their academic program. General eligibility requirements for honors in the major are:
- Grade point average of 3.00 or higher for all courses required in the major
- Grade point average of 3.50 or higher for all upper-level courses required in the major
- Registration for and successful completion of an honors in the major project or independent study course
Not all schools/colleges award honors in the major. More specific information is available in the Undergraduate Catalog. Or you may contact your advising office for further information.
Honors Degree and Honors Degree with Thesis
Honors Degree and Honors Degree with Thesis are awarded to graduating seniors who complete the Honors College Requirements.
Phi Beta Kappa
To be elected Phi Beta Kappa, a student must be a L&S degree candidate with sufficient credits in humanities, social sciences, foreign languages, math, and general liberal studies and have completed at least 60 graded credits at UWM. Juniors must be in the upper 2% of their class with a 3.800 cumulative GPA. Seniors must be in the upper 8% of their class with a 3.600 cumulative GPA.
Senior High Honors & Senior Honors
Senior High Honors & Senior Honors are only awarded by the Peck School of the Arts. To earn Senior High Honors a student must maintain a 3.250 on their last 60 UWM Honors credits including at least 45 credits of A. To earn Senior Honors a student must maintain a 3.250 GPA on the last 60 UWM credits including at least 20 credits of A.
