Panther Advocates

The Panther Advocates is a grassroots advocacy coalition of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alumni, community members, students and their parents, and all who are concerned with the future of higher education at UWM. We are committed to educating elected officials and our community about the importance of UWM to the state of Wisconsin.

Participation in Panther Advocates allows you to utilize your networking and professional contacts to be an effective and powerful advocate for UWM and higher education.

Your involvement also provides an avenue for meaningful involvement with your university and an opportunity to learn about public policy and issues that affect higher education. Sign up today.

One important reminder for everyone employed by the university: UWM's resources, including its e-mail system, cannot be used for any political purposes. Employees should do all political communications from off campus.

Thanks for being part of Legislative Day!

A busload of UWM alumni, faculty, staff, students and other friends of the university took part in Legislative Day, March 7, at the State Capitol in Madison.

We met with state Representatives Jason Fields, Mark Honadel, Sandy Pasch and JoCasta Zamarripa, and Senators Spencer Coggs, Chris Larson and Lena Taylor., as well as with University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly and UWM Vice Chancellor Tom Luljak. Tom also gave us a tour of the Capitol and we sat in on part of a State Senate hearing.

It was a great opportunity to thank the legislators for their support for UWM and to promote the university's agenda.

Chancellor Lovell testifies against additional budget cuts

The UW System is being asked to withstand 38 percent of the total budget lapse to state agencies even though it accounts for 7 percent of state expenditures—raising the issue of the fairness of the proposal. That funding reduction would be in addition to the $250 million in cuts already allocated to the UW System during this budget cycle. UWM’s share of the newly proposed lapse would be about $8.9 million. Read Chancellor Lovell's response to the proposed budget cuts.
