Megan Sampson, BS Education `09 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Teacher at Wauwatosa East High School, Wisconsin
Megan graduated in 2009 and is already making an impact on the teaching of English in the State of Wisconsin. Previously employed at Bradley Tech (a Milwaukee Public School), she started an initiative to help inspire a love of reading in her students, which she called “New Books for Great Kids.” Through her efforts, over $1,000 was raised from contributors in Green Bay and De Pere, and individual staff members at MPS. In addition to finding the funds for her 80 students to purchase books that personally interested them, she had the foresight to realize the students would need to physically get to a bookstore to purchase their books. As a result, she provided them with the means to travel to the bookstore by public transportation. Each teenager received an envelope from Megan containing a $10 gift card to Barnes and Noble Bookstore and two bus tickets to get to and return from Bayshore Town Center in Glendale during Winter break. Her efforts were rewarded by being named a recipient of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English (WCTE) Nancy Hoefs’ Memorial Award for Outstanding First Year Teacher 2010.
