Holly Maes ('81) and Rich

Campus Love Story:  "My love of life Rich and I met at UWM in 1978. I was a premed student and he was a physics student. I was struggling in calculus based physics (always did prefer the biologic sciences) and he was not paying attention to Professor Greene but looking my way. He shyly asked me on a date to the Flicks, and I accepted, hoping he might be a good tutor for physics. The spark was lit by attending date nights at the planetarium, Professor Greene's rainbow lectures  and a mutual love of science. Things took a bad turn in March of 1980 when Holly  was hit by a drunk driver on the corner of Kenwood and Oakland Ave. She spent weeks in the hospital, but Rich never left her side as she went through operations and rehab, pushing her wheelchair to classes everyday for months. We were married in August of 1980, and Holly was able to walk down the aisle, less than 5 months after being told she would never walk again. We have been married 31 years, had 4 children and are extremely happy. The roles are now somewhat reversed - Rich is retired and disabled due to multiple sclerosis, and some days it is Holly that pushes the wheelchair, on days when Rich's strength just isn't there. And yes, Holly did go on to medical school, and is a practicing pediatrician and huge advocate for children in east central Illinois. Rich and Holly are expecting their first grandchild on the 4th of July this year. We still catch a UWM game whenever it is on TV, and have a godson who currenty attends UWM. Thank God for physics class and college love!!"
