Academic Opportunity Center
Admissions/Advising
The Academic Opportunity Center (AOC) provides access to UWM for
students who are serious about continuing their education and show
academic potential for university study, but who do not meet regular
admission criteria. Some students admitted to AOC are eligible for
the U.S. Department of Education funded Student Support Services
Program aimed at students who come from low-income families, are
first-generation college students, or have physical disabilities.
In addition to admitting students, AOC provides support services
for students to help them develop their academic skills and adjust
to university life.
For additional information about the Academic Opportunity Center,
please visit www.uwm.edu/Dept/AOC
or call (414) 229-4696.
Students who are admitted to the University through AOC are assigned an advisor who will work closely with them. Typical activities of an advisor are as follows:
- helping the student register for classes
- monitoring student academic progress throughout the semester
- encouraging tutoring when necessary
- informing the student of University policy and procedures
- maintaining student records
- serving as a referral source for students
- assisting students in applying for financial aid
