Archaeological Institute of America-Milwaukee Society
The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA)-Milwaukee Society is one of 107 local societies throughout the United States and Canada, with two in Europe. The AIA-Milwaukee Society was founded in 1968 and now has a membership of almost 100. Each year between September and May the Milwaukee Society sponsors at least six lectures by professional archaeologists who are eager to share the results of their fieldwork and research with the general public. Three of these lectures are provided annually by the national AIA office and are funded through membership dues and contributions. At least three additional lectures and occasional other programs or field trips are organized locally. All of our lectures are free and open to the public. All lectures are illustrated and intended for a general audience.
Members of the national AIA may elect to join the Milwaukee Society at no extra charge. Membership privileges include subscriptions to the national and local newsletters, eligibility to participate in the Annual Meeting and register at a discount, national and local governance and other volunteer opportunities, as well as all mailings and announcements by the Milwaukee Society. Members are also eligible for discounts on locally sponsored field trips, tours, and may include subscriptions to national publications such as Archaeology Magazine (popular) or the American Journal of Archaeology (scholarly) at discounted rates. In addition, AIA members have the satisfaction of joining with over 8,500 others in supporting the AIA's efforts to promote a vivid and informed public interest in the cultures and civilizations of the past, support archaeological research, foster the sound professional practice of archaeology, advocate the preservation of the world's archaeological heritage, and represent the discipline in the wider world.
Twice a year the Milwaukee Society publishes a local members-only newsletter called The Artifact which includes notices of upcoming events, previews of forthcoming lectures, reports from the field by our professional members, news from the Central Office, Fieldwork Opportunities and other items of interest to our members. If you have news items you would like to share with the members of the local society, please send them along to Jane Waldbaum.
