Welcome
to UWM, where theatre artists can dream, imagine, and find truth.
A
good scene should be not a picture but an image. . . .Everything
that is actual must undergo a strange metamorphosis, a kind of
sea-change, before it can become truth in the theatre.
– Robert
Edmond Jones
Theatre at UWM challenges every student to undergo
a personal metamorphosis and access the talent within, becoming an
artist who can dream, imagine, and engage the world. UWM provides
an environment and course of study that can bring about a sea-change
so a growing artist may discover personal truth.
How does UWM provide
a nurturing theatrical environment?
Our highly trained faculty continue
to work in their specialties, creating valuable links between students
and professionals. The
theatre faculty believes in the collaborative process of theatre,
bringing
professional expertise into the classroom, and building a solid
educational foundation for their students. Our faculty has broad
experience in
the non-profit and commercial theatre, including work with many
innovative companies, such as the Tony-winning Utah Shakespearean
Festival,
Montana Repertory Thesatre, Playwrights Horizons, LaMama ETC,
Milwaukee Repertory Theater, the Skylight Opera Theatre, Chamber
Theatre,
New American Theatre, Peninsula Players, Renaissance Theatreworks,
and
Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre.
Diverse curricula have been
designed to meet the needs of each individual, from the generalist
who wants to try it all, to the
specialist who
requires in-depth training.
Theatre students have several different
options available:
B.A. Degree in Theatre Studies teaches students
the broad spectrum of theatre arts, in a liberal arts environment.
B.A. Degree in Theatre in Society focuses on the use of theatrical
techniques as a means of exploring social issues and promoting
change.
B.A. Degree in K-12 Theatre
Education develops
teachers for a new era, as graduates earn their state teaching license
and credentials.
BFA Degree in Acting teaches the art and
technique of acting, providing students with the opportunity to
connect their
art to the world
around them.
B.F.A. Degree in Costume
Production teaches
the art and craft of creating costumes for the stage, developing
students whose
skills
will place them in some of the best theatre costume
shops in the United States, or on the path to higher education
in costume
design
and construction.
B.F.A. Degree in Stage Management teaches students the management and organizational skills necessary
in production
from first
rehearsal to closing night. Classroom work supports
the actual stage management
of departmental productions. Students leave prepared
for entry-level theatre management positions or continued
graduate
study.
B.F.A. Degree in Technical Production provides students
with training in many technical areas of production
including scenery production,
properties production, lighting and sound. Students
will be prepared for careers in the professional
theatre shops
or continued
study
at the graduate level.
UWM is set in the state’s
largest theatrical community. Urban learning allows
students to participate in a thriving professional
theatre environment. Not only do UWM students engage
in theatre on
campus, they also learn in the theatres throughout
town. Milwaukee boasts over 25 professional companies
such as Milwaukee Repertory
Theater, Skylight Opera Theatre, Chamber Theatre,
Renaissance Theatreworks, Next Act, and First Stage
Children’s Theatre. Unique to the
UW campus, this setting gives immediate access to
theatre specialists who teach, mentor, and hire UWM
students.
UWM Theatre is designed to provide each
student with the challenges and experiences every
artist needs
to dream,
create and imagine… and
discover their truth.
