Welcome to the Department of Theatre at the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts. We hope you
will explore these web pages to learn more about our theatre degrees
and production programs as well as the rich artistic environment
and learning opportunities you will find in all Peck School of the
Arts programs.
UWM Theatre boasts an outstanding teaching faculty of working professional
theatre artists whose work has been seen in regional and commercial
theatres across the country, including the Tony-winning Utah Shakespearean
Festival, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Montana Repertory Theatre,
Playwrights Horizons, The Public Theatre, LaMama, ETC, Milwaukee
Repertory Theater, the Skylight Opera Theatre, Chamber Theatre, Music
Theatre of Wichita, New American Theatre, Peninsula Players, Renaissance
Theatreworks, and Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre.
In addition to an outstanding theatre curriculum, we produce two
separate production series in three very exciting theatre spaces.
These series ensure that our students get a wide range of practical
performance and production opportunities.

Most importantly our students have the opportunity to see and learn
from a vast array of theatre productions while they study here. With
over 25 producing theatre companies in the city, as well as national-level
museums, ballet, and contemporary dance companies, students have
the chance to see some of the best professional theatre in the region,
and the opportunity to work in these same companies while they complete
their degrees here.
Diverse curricula have been designed to meet the needs of each individual,
from the generalist who wants to learn it all, to the students who
desire in-depth professional training for a career in performance
or production.
Theatre students have several different options available:
B.A. Degree in Theatre Studies provides students with a broad-based
professional theatre education that emphasizes both practical and
theoretical studies with a wide array of options--including stage
management, design, applied theatre, play writing, and acting--appropriate to students with
a broad theatre foundation.
B.A. Degree in K-12 Theatre Education develops teachers for a new
era, as graduates earn their state teaching license and credentials.
BFA Degree in Acting teaches the art and technique of acting, providing
students with the opportunity to connect their art to the world around
them.
B.F.A. Degree in Costume Production teaches the art and craft of
creating costumes for the stage, developing students whose skills
will place them in some of the best theatre costume shops in the
United States, or on the path to higher education in costume design
and construction.
B.F.A. Degree in Technical Production provides students with training
in many technical areas of production including scenery production,
properties production, lighting and sound. Students will be prepared
for careers in the professional theatre or for continued study at
the graduate level.
