Professor Bender specializes in microeconomics. His recent research has been on the economic analysis of political markets.

Professor Bender has published articles on the analysis of political markets, tax rates and tax revenue, and housing markets in journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Inquiry, Public Choice, Journal of Urban Economics, Southern Economic Journal, and Journal of Regional Science. His recent research has been on legislator shirking and term limits. He also has served as a referee for numerous journals including the Journal of Political Economy, American Economic Review, American Political Science Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Law and Economics, and Economic Inquiry.
