Areas of Expertise
Dr. Smunt’s research and teaching focus on strategic planning for both manufacturing and service firms, supply-chain management, health care information systems and operations, business process management and international operations.


Professional Activities
With over 25 years of experience at leading universities in both the United States and Europe, Dr. Smunt joined the Lubar School as its fifth dean in August 2009.  Throughout his career, he has published in prestigious academic journals, and taught in MBA and Executive MBA programs at top-ranked institutions around the world.  He currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Operations Management, and is a past area editor for Production and Operations Management

Dr. Smunt is a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute.  He is also a Certified Fellow in Productivity and Inventory Management, a senior member of the Industrial Engineering Institute, and a member of INFORMS, the Production and Operations Management Society.  In 2005-06, he was an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow at the University of Chicago, the premier leadership development program for university administrators.

Dr. Smunt has been an advisor, executive educator, and consultant for a number of major corporations, including American Express, Duke Energy, Ecolab, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Continental General Tire, Henredon Furniture, R.J. Reynolds, Coin Acceptors, Affinitec, MEMC (formerly Monsanto Electronics Materials Corporation) and Hillenbrand Industries.
