Engineering Management Masters Program Debuts at UWM in Spring 2002

MILWAUKEE--In February 2002, a Engineering Management Masters Program will be introduced at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The program is the result of a collaborative effort by the School of Business Administration and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The program has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of practicing engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians who have at least three years of work experience. The goal is to provide individuals who have a proven track record of success and a strong technical background with the skills necessary to enter engineering management-level positions.

"This new masters program introduces a unique blend of management concepts and technical focus," says Rita Cheng, associate dean-academic affairs in the School of Business Administration. Faculty from the School of Business Administration and the College of Engineering and Applied Science collaborated to design a curriculum that emphasizes engineering management issues, and the management of projects, people and resources in a technical environment.

"We were looking at the education needs of, for example, engineers who are beginning to take on managerial responsibilities in their organization," Cheng elaborates. "Taught by professors in the School of Business and the College of Engineering, each student will not only be introduced to management essentials, but also will be given an opportunity to upgrade their engineering skills."

Classes will begin each February, and entry into the program will be competitive and limited to about 30 places in each class. The program consists of three terms totaling 16 months.

Each term runs approximately 20 weeks, with classes meeting every other week on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday. The lock-step format includes three courses per term.

The fee for the entire program is $25,500 and includes tuition, books, parking and program-sponsored events.
