UWM Receives Additional IRS Grant For Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic
MILWAUKEE – Christine Bauman has been awarded an $85,000 grant for 2004 from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to continue operating the UWM Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). Bauman is an assistant professor of accounting and taxation with the UWM School of Business Administration.
With the 2004 grant award, Bauman has secured $290,500 of cash grants from the IRS to operate the Clinic that she founded in 2001. The IRS also notified Bauman that she has been selected for a multiple year grant covering the period January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2006. Future funding levels will be awarded on an annual basis. Bauman serves as Faculty Director of the LITC, and Mary Rozek, CPA and Faculty Associate serves as the Clinic’s Managing Director.
Low-income taxpayers needing help with resolving a federal income tax notice or IRS audit can get free assistance at the LITC. Translation services in Spanish are also offered free of charge. UWM’s graduate tax students, alumni from UWM’s MS in Management-Taxation program, and tax faculty work independently of the Internal Revenue Service.
“The LITC not only provides a valued service to the community, but gives UWM tax students the opportunity to serve as taxpayer advocates in real-life tax controversies,” said Bauman.
Bauman is also a member of the IRS Practice and Procedures Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the recipient of the 2003 UWM Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence, and the 2002 co-winner of the Deloitte & Touche/American Taxation Association Teaching Innovation award.
The LITC can be contacted at 229-3232 or toll-free at 866-896-5482.
