Bradley Distinguished Lecture Series: "Who Killed Health Care?... And the Consumer-Driven Cure"
Monday, September 10, 2007
12 noon – 1:30 p.m.
Pfister Hotel, 424 E. Wisconsin Ave.

In the battle for U.S. health care, patients and doctors are losing, says Regina E. Herzlinger, one of the nation's most respected health care analysts. Dr. Herzlinger is the Nancy R. McPherson Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. She is widely recognized for her innovative research in health care, including her early predictions of the unraveling of managed care and the rise of consumer-driven health care and health care focused factories, two terms that she coined. Money magazine has dubbed her the “Godmother” of consumer-driven health care.

In her latest book Who Killed Health Care?, Dr. Herzlinger argues that the current system, which is organized around payers and providers rather than the needs of its users, is eroding patient welfare and pushing costs out of the reach of millions. She suggests a plan for a consumer-driven system that will deliver affordable, high-quality care to everyone. By putting insurance money in the hands of patients, removing the middleman in the doctor-patient relationship, and giving employers cost relief, Dr. Herzlinger contends, consumers and physicians will be empowered to improve the system.

Dr. Herzlinger is also the author of Consumer-Driven Health Care: Implications for Providers, Payers, and Policymakers and Market-Driven Health Care. Her research has been profiled in numerous industry journals and business publications. Regina Herzlinger received her Bachelor’s Degree from MIT and her Doctorate from the Harvard Business School.
