Lubar School Receives IRS Grant for Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic
MILWAUKEE, May 6, 2009 – The Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) at UWM’s Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business has been awarded a $76,840 grant for 2009 from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in support of its important role serving low-income taxpayers in the community.
The clinic provides taxpayers who meet specific income thresholds with free assistance in resolving a federal income tax notice or IRS audit. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. The work is conducted independent of the IRS by the Lubar School’s graduate tax students, tax faculty, and other tax professionals. Mary Rozek, CPA and Faculty Associate, serves as the clinic’s director. Robert Meldman is the clinic’s executive director.
“We’re delighted to receive this year’s grant to meet a pressing need in our community, and to provide our students with the opportunity to serve as advocates in real-life tax controversies,” said Rozek.
With the 2009 grant award, UWM’s LITC has secured close to $700,000 in cash grants from the IRS to operate the Clinic, which was founded in 2001.
The LITC can be contacted at (414) 229-3232 or toll-free at (866) 896-5482.
