Low Income Taxpayer Clinic The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) sponsors a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic which provides tax assistance to eligible taxpayers on the Federal tax matters listed below. An Attorney, CPA, former IRS Revenue Agents, and graduate tax students meet with taxpayers and assist them in responding to tax notices and preparing for an audit. Communications with our staff are held in confidence.
UWM’s LITC can assist you with the following Federal tax issues related to tax matters:
- IRS Audits and Examination
- IRS Appeals
- IRS Collection
- Earned Income Credit
- Filing Status & Dependents
- Failure to File Returns
- Innocent Spouse Status
- Independent Contractor/ Employee
UWM’s LITC does not assist in any criminal tax matters, any tax return preparation or state tax matters. The LITC does not answer any tax questions over the phone.
EligibilityGenerally, you may be eligible for assistance from UWM’s LITC if you meet the following income requirements:

| 5 | $62,000 |
Taxpayers with larger family sizes should call the LITC for more information.
Case acceptance is based on criteria, which include the amount at issue, income level, educational value of the case, and the time availability.
Is English Your Second Language?If English is not your native language, the LITC will offer assistance with Spanish and Hmong languages. Student interpreters will assist tax volunteers in discussions.
