New Freshmen Orientation Program

After you and your guests check-in, you will be welcomed to campus by representatives from the Recruitment and Outreach and Enrollment Services departments. You will then meet with Campus Ambassadors (current UWM students) to discuss campus resources and their experiences at UWM.

Soon thereafter you will join your fellow Business students and the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business advisors for planning out your first semester schedule of classes.

New Freshmen Orientation

Note: Please be aware that due to the number of students in your session that day, you may not have as much one-on-one time with your advisor as you would like. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you meet with your advisors during your first semester. Students starting in the fall will be invited to our Focus on Freshmen advising to go over any questions you may have, and to plan out your future semesters.

Your registration session will begin with a Business advisor explaining the results of your English, Math and any other placement exams you have taken.

Based on these results, you will generate a list of courses to register for. A common first semester, business freshmen, schedule generally includes 4-5 courses from the following areas:

  • English: based on your placement results
  • Math: based on your placement results
  • Business: either BUS ADM 100 or BUS ADM 230
  • Economics: either ECON 100, 103 or 104
  • Communication: Either COMMUN 103 or 105
  • General Education Courses (GER)
General Education Courses are outside of the Lubar School of Business that provide a broad knowledge of the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

They are located in the back of the Schedule of Classes every semester under Courses Approved for GER distribution or can be seen at UWM Schedule of Classes.

To graduate, Business students will need a number of courses in these areas, namely:
  • 3 credits from Arts
  • 6 credits from Humanities
  • 6 credits from Social Sciences
  • 6 credits from Natural Sciences (3 credits of which must include a lab)
  • 3 credits of cultural diversity that can be taken in conjunction with either an arts, humanities, or social science course.

Please be advised that these are merely suggestions. The advisors will work with you to create a schedule you are comfortable with and that meets your goal of graduating in a timely fashion.

If you would like to learn more about the types of courses offered, please feel free to visit the following websites prior to attending your New Freshmen Orientation.
