Our student newsletter “Taking Care of Business” is designed to provide the most up-to-date administrative information needed each semester in the Lubar School, to announce professional and academic activities and events, and to keep all students informed about program requirements, administrative deadlines, student business organizations, faculty, and staff. If there is any other information you would like to see published in our newsletters, please let us know.
New Applied Finance Lab Opens The David O. Nicholas Applied Finance Lab was officially opened in April 2008. President & Chief Investment Officer of Nicholas Company, Inc., David O. Nicholas made a $2.5 million gift to establish this state-of-the-art facility in Lubar Hall. Nicholas is a 1987 graduate of the School’s graduate finance program. “The David O. Nicholas Applied Finance Lab bridges the classroom and the world of investment finance, enhancing our students’ capabilities by providing them with sophisticated financial databases and investment decision-making and management tools,” said Dean V. Kanti Prasad. Chancellor Santiago, Sheldon B. Lubar, David Nicholas and Ab Nicholas, were among the guests at the lab’s opening.
The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art professional databases, streaming financial news, financial software, and high-power dual-monitor computers, and features the same technology and real-time market data, analysis, and news available to professional traders in investment firms. The facility will also support a full spectrum of curriculum enhancements in both the investment and corporate finance arenas. “The lab will play a key role, not only in developing investment management expertise in-state, but in retaining that talent pool for our large investment management community,” said Nicholas.

AACSB Accreditation Accrediting bodies are created to monitor quality in a given field or profession. The standards developed by an accrediting organization are endorsed by the profession as meeting an acceptable level of competence and quality. Virtually all reputable public and private educational institutions, from grade schools to high schools, to colleges and universities, seek accreditation by organizations representing their peer institutions.
The undergraduate and graduate programs of the UW-Milwaukee Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business Administration are accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This international accrediting body is devoted to the promotion of excellence and continuous improvement of higher education in both business administration and management. A select group of colleges and universities world-wide are accredited by AACSB International in both their graduate and undergraduate programs, after a rigorous accreditation process. A degree from an AACSB accredited school is valued by employers, and important if you are considering further education.
Lubar School Black & Gold Committee Activities In 2001, the campus-wide Black & Gold Commission was created to evaluate and enhance the student experience at UW-Milwaukee. Registrationn Students have been able to register for the Fall 2008 semester since April using the PAWS (Panther Access to Web Services) system. Students can still register for the semester on PAWS on or before August 11, 2008. Students registering between August 12 and August 25 will be required to pay the $200 tuition deposit before registering. Students who register between August 26 and September 15 will need to pay a $50 late fee in addition to the $200 tuition deposit. Changes to existing schedules can be made through the first day of classes, September 2nd.
Complete registration information and extensive instructions for using PAWS are available in the
Schedule of Classes.
Fall 2008 Important Deadlines There are several dates you should keep in mind as the Fall 2008 semester begins.
ATTENTION – Tuition Fee Deadline The Fall 2008 online
Schedule of Classes provides detailed tuition information. Or look under the Schedule of Classes “Tuition and Fees.” The key dates to remember are:
Tuition is due on
August 25. At a minimum, a $200 deposit is due August 25. If you are paying tuition on the installment plan, you must complete those arrangements with the Bursar’s Office (Mitchell 295, 414-229-4914) by August 25.
If you do not pay the minimum deposit by August 25, your Fall 2008 schedule will be cancelled, and you will be
administratively dropped from the classes for which you were registered. There is no guarantee that you will be able to get back into the same classes with the same schedule if you find yourself in this situation. In addition, late fees will be charged if you do not pay your tuition on time. In order to avoid administrative hassles, extra fees, and possible scheduling problems, you need to pay your tuition by the dates listed above.
Adding Classes You can add full-term classes through September 15th online using PAWS, if the classes are not fully enrolled. If you need to add a class that is already fully enrolled, you must obtain an add form, available in Mellencamp 274 or the Student Services Center in BUS N297. The instructor must allow you to add the class and sign the add form, and you will also need the dean’s stamp from the Student Services Center for all business classes. You then return the completed form to Mellencamp 274.
NOTE: 400-Level – Students who completed Closed Course Interest forms on-line over the summer have priority in adding classes.
Credit/NoCreditYou can also change any one of your GER courses to the credit/no credit grading basis through
September 15th. If you need further information about how this special grading option works, check the
Fall 2008 online Schedule of Classes or contact an advisor in the Student Services Center.
Dropping a ClassInstructions for dropping a class can be found in the online Fall 2008
Schedule of Classes. There are three drop deadlines:
- If you decide to drop one of your Fall 2008 courses, you may do so on-line using PAWS through September 15th with no penalty.
- If you drop a class between September 16th and September 29th, there will be a financial penalty.
- If you drop a class between September 30th and October 24th, there will be a financial penalty and a “W” (withdrawal) notation on your permanent transcript. There are no drops allowed for academic reasons after October 24th.
The above information pertains to drops of full semester courses. If you are dropping a partial semester course or a short course the deadlines change. Consult the Fall 2008 Schedule of Classes for further information. For the financial implications of dropping or withdrawing from classes, please see the
Schedule of Classes deadlines.
Fall 2008 Room Changes Lubar School room assignments are not final until after the first week of classes. Each semester a number of classroom assignments need to be changed due to fluctuating enrollments or teaching needs. Please check the yellow comprehensive room change lists posted throughout Lubar Hall. This list will be posted outside any classroom that has had a change. It is best to check for room changes online via the PAWS system, where information is updated daily. Thank you for your understanding this semester!
