Welcome to Spring 2008! This newsletter provides Lubar School students with the most up-to-date information needed to start the Spring 2008 semester. You will find announcements of activities and events for all business students, and information about academic and professional programs, student business organizations, faculty, and administration.
Registration Students are able to register for the Spring 2008 semester starting the week of November 26, 2007, using the PAWS (Panther Access to Web Services) system. Students can continue to register for the semester on PAWS on or before December 28, 2007. However, after December 28, if you have not previously registered for any courses, you will be required to pay a $200 deposit prior to registering for courses. Changes to existing schedules can be made through the first day of classes, January 22.

Spring 2008 Important DeadlinesThere are several dates you should keep in mind as the Spring 2008 semester begins:
ATTENTION – New Tuition Fee Deadline
The key dates to remember are:
Tuition is due on January 11, 2008. At a minimum, a $200 deposit is due by January 11. If you are paying tuition on the installment plan, you must complete those arrangements with the Bursar’s Office (Mitchell 295, 414-229-4914) by January 11.
If you do not pay the minimum deposit by January 11, your Spring 2008 schedule will be cancelled, and you will no longer be enrolled in the classes for which you were registered. If you find yourself in this situation, there is no guarantee that you will be able to get back into the same classes with the same schedule. In addition, late fees will be charged if you do not pay your tuition on time. In order to avoid administrative hassles, extra fees, and possible scheduling problems, you need to pay your tuition by the dates listed above. Please refer to the online Schedule of Classes if you have further questions regarding your tuition.
Registration: You must register for classes prior to January 11, 2008. Students registering on or after January 11 are considered to be late registrants and will be charged a $50.00 late fee and other penalties for late payment of tuition and fees. Complete registration information (basic enrollment, adding, dropping, withdrawing, etc.) is available in the Schedule of Classes.
Late Adds: You can add full-term classes through February 4, 2008 online using PAWS, if the classes are not fully enrolled. If you need to add a class that is already fully enrolled, you must obtain an add form, available in Mellencamp 274 or the Student Services Center in LUB N297. You will need instructor permission to add the class and the instructor’s signature on the add form, and you will also need a dean’s stamp from the Student Services Center. You then return the completed form to Mellencamp 274.
NOTE: 400-Level – Students who completed Closed Section Interest forms on-line over the winter break have priority in adding classes.
Credit/NoCredit: You can also change one of your GER courses to the credit/no credit grading basis through February 4, 2008. If you need further information about how this special grading option works, check the Schedule of Classes.
Dropping a Class: Instructions for dropping a class can be found in the Spring 2007 Schedule of Classes. There are three drop deadlines:
1) If you decide to drop one of your Spring 2008 courses, you may do so on-line using PAWS through February 4 with no penalty.
2) If you drop a class between February 5 and February 86, there will be a financial penalty.
3) If you drop a class between February 18 and March 14, there will be a financial penalty and a “W” (withdrawal) notation on your permanent transcript. There are no drops allowed for academic reasons after March 14.
The above information pertains to drops of full semester courses. If you are dropping a partial semester course or a short course the deadlines change. Consult the Spring 2008 Schedule of Classes, under “change in registration” for further information. For the financial implications of dropping or withdrawing from classes, click on “Fees/Tuition Assessment for Drop/Withdrawal.”
Spring 2008 Room Changes Before starting your Spring 2008 classes, please check for room changes online via the PAWS system, where information is updated daily. Once the semester begins, we will still have to make have to make a few room switches due to fluctuating enrollments or teaching needs. Room assignments are not final until after the first week of classes. Please check the yellow room signs that are posted outside business classrooms to make sure you are in the right course. Comprehensive room change lists are also posted on bulletin boards throughout Lubar Hall. Thank you for your understanding this semester!
AACSB Accreditation
Accrediting bodies are created to monitor quality in a given field or profession. The standards developed by an accrediting organization are endorsed by the profession as meeting an acceptable level of competence and quality. Virtually all reputable public and private educational institutions, from grade schools to high schools, to colleges and universities, seek accreditation by organizations representing their peer institutions.
The undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs of the UW-Milwaukee Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB-International), through 2012. This international accrediting body is devoted to the promotion of excellence and continuous improvement of higher education in business administration and management. Only one other school in the Metro Milwaukee area holds AACSB accreditation. A degree from an AACSB accredited school is valued by employers, and especially important if you are considering further education.

All Career Services workshops and events are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Please register prior to attending any of the workshops.The Career Services Center is open from 9:00am-6:00pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and 9:00am-4:30pm Wednesdays through Fridays.
Career Fair The Lubar School’s Seventh Annual
Business Career Fair will be held this year on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, from 1:00pm to 4:30pm in Lubar Hall. This is a great opportunity for you to meet with area employers, circulate your resume, and explore job and internship prospects. Graduate business students seeking employment are encouraged to attend. Companies attending will be posted on the g/drive under “Student Services/Career Services.” In 2007, 68 companies were represented at the fair. The Career Services Center in the Lubar School is also planning professional workshops for the Spring 2008 semester, and several will be offered prior to the Career Fair on February 19.
PantherJOBS UWM's online system for resume referrals and on-campus interviewing is called
PantherJOBS (formerly eRecruiting). Students can register for the Spring 2007 recruiting season starting Tuesday,
January 2, 2008 in the Career Services Center, LUB N203. Students who have registered for PantherJOBS in the past can reactivate their accounts by completing a Data Sheet (interns) or registration card (graduating students). A $15 one-time fee is charged the first time a student registers. Once the fee is paid students may use the service until graduation at no additional charge. Students can pick up a Data Sheet or registration card in the Career Services Center. The Data Sheets are also available on the
g-drive at Student Services, Career Services.
Black & Gold Committee Report Card The campus-wide Black & Gold Commission was created in 2001 to enhance the student experience at UW-Milwaukee. Subsequently, individual schools and colleges formed their own Black & Gold Committees in order to focus on the needs of their specific student populations. Since its inception, the Lubar School Black & Gold commission has generated several new programs and policies designed to facilitate the academic and professional goals of business students, including:
- Transition orientation sessions to help sophomores and juniors in planning their academic major and developing professional career strategies;
- “Meet & Greet” mixers for students and faculty, and staff;
- Online advisor surveys to provide student feedback to the advising staff;
- Higher requirements for the campus SPEAK test, to improve English skills and promote classroom understanding; and
- A formal statement of "Dual Expectations" to facilitate positive educational outcomes for both faculty and staff.
The Lubar School Black and Gold Committee continues to work on new initiatives, including a group project workroom with computer facilities, and a Learning Center. More information on the activities of the Black and Gold Committee can be found at their website.
Building Hours There are three general access computer labs in Lubar Hall open to all business students, equipped with the latest software and Internet tools. The computer labs are open from 8:00am until midnight Monday through Friday, and on the weekends.
There are also several study areas on the second floor of Lubar Hall. Please feel free to make use of these areas for individual or group study sessions. Building hours coincide with the computer lab hours.
