INOVA Presents:
An Artist Talk with Steve Rowell
Responding: Richard Grusin (C21 director) and Jennifer Johung (C21 fellow)
2:00 pm, INOVA Institute of Visual Arts
2155 N Prospect Ave
Reception follows

Artist Steve Rowell, currently exhibiting at INOVA, discusses his Uncanny Sensing, Remote Valleys project: an investigation of ecology, animism, and the anthropic principle in our technology-dominated era. At various sites in Wisconsin, Rowell collected sound and imagery through an experimental method of fieldwork, collecting raw media through the use of remote sensing devices. The works on view document animal behavior, industrial processes, erosional effects, and other elements of the landscape and environment.

Broadly, Rowell's exhibition is about coming to terms with the Anthropocene and how we perceive the natural world using technology, thereby giving us a synthetic, uncanny view of our post-natural world.

The afternoon features responses to the exhibition and the scope of Rowell's research from media theorist and ecocritic Richard Grusin, and art historian Jennifer Johung. Conservation biologist Christine Anhalt will give a special presentation on wolf pack research in Wisconsin and demonstrate the use of an audio surveillance device called the "howl box."

Steve Rowell: Uncanny Sensing, one part of his larger project, is on view at INOVA through September 15, 2013.
