Three C21 fellows discuss their approaches to using digital sources/technology to do historical research.

Joe Austin (History)
Is searching databases enough to gain entrance to "digital humanities"? In this talk, Joe Austin will reflect on his experiences with re-assembling the social science discourses on African American youths and criminality in the US before 1940 using databases of past scholarship.

Elana Levine (JAMS)
Elana Levine will discuss tools and methods for managing historical materials digitally, including ways of using optical character recognition (OCR) and document management software to organize and work with research materials.

Mark Vareschi (English, UW-Madison)
Mark Vareschi will discuss the relationship between ephemeral archival objects and digital database objects in a study of eighteenth-century British playbills.
