Virginia Stoffel, Ph.D.
CABHR scientist and associate professor, College of Health Sciences

Virginia Stoffel Dr. Stoffel is a CABHR scientist and an associate professor in the department of occupational therapy at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee College of Health Sciences. She earned a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the College of St. Catherine, a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and a doctorate in leadership for the advancement of learning and service from Cardinal Stritch University.

Dr. Stoffel is board certified in mental health through the advanced certification program of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Her research centers on the strengths and needs of people with serious mental illness living in the community, the occupational nature of people with substance use disorders, and evidence-based practices regarding behavioral change, including issues related to substance use/misuse/abuse and dependence. Most recently, Dr. Stoffel completed a phenomenological study of clubhouse engagement and mental health recovery. Her recent work explores the lived experience of mental illness and recovery using in-depth interviews, photos, and narratives to capture the first-person perspective.

She currently serves on the editorial board of Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. An active member and leader in the AOTA, she sits on the Commission on Continuing Competency and Professional Development. She is chair of the board of directors for the Mental Health Association of Wisconsin.
