L'Aquila, capital of the Abruzzo region, was significantly damaged and about ten kilometers area surrounding L'Aquila was heavily damaged and destroyed. The Center for By-Products Utilization
(CBU) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is an outstanding example of a successful public/private partnership. Formed in 1988, the CBU is dedicated to preserving the environment by finding practical uses for what is otherwise considered waste. It does so through research on a variety of materials. The end result is the creation of cost-effective products that satisfy existing needs and bring about a significant decrease in the volume of waste.
