A one-day workshop on Uses of Flowable Slurry Containing Coal Ash, Used Foundry Sand, and Other Recyclable Products has been planned at the Smith Brothers Restaurant, Port Washington, (25 miles north of Milwaukee). The purpose of the workshop is to present important technical information and review production and installation aspects on a new type of backfill material for trenches and other excavations, as well as for filling abandoned underground pipes and tunnels. Flowable Slurry is a low strength concrete-like material that is made from one or more of the materials such as coal ash, used foundry sand, regular concrete sand, water, and some portland cement. The strength of this material can be adjusted up to 1200 psi. It is being specified increasingly by municipalities, state highway departments, and engineers for many applications.
The workshop program includes information on material characteristics, mixture proportions, field testing, placement, strength development, shrinkage, permeability, etc. The workshop will also present well documented case histories of successful installations both in the Milwaukee area as well as in other states. It includes a visit to a flowable slurry production facility and demonstration of slurry production, placement, and old slurry excavation. Handout material will be provided. The workshop should be of interest to those associated with building design and materials engineers, architects, engineering technicians, engineers working in governmental agencies, industry and private practice, engineering faculty and students, as well as ready mixed concrete producers, and contractors.
