Director of CDS

Carolyn Esswein, AICP, CNU-A, Is the new Director of CDS. Carolyn has 20 years of experience working with public and private sector clients in planning and urban design. She has worked with more than 30 communities throughout Wisconsin, helping them add value, redevelop neighborhoods and corridors, and plan how they will grow into the future. Special areas of interest include community planning, urban sustainability, public involvement and visioning, market-based redevelopment strategies, and design guidelines. Carolyn has received numerous planning awards for her work from the Wisconsin chapter of the American Planning Association.

Carolyn has previously been a principal and owner with Planning and Design Institute, Inc. (PDI) and an Associate with GRAEF. In addition to her professional practice, Carolyn has been an adjunct professor at SARUP since 2002, teaching graduate courses on urban design, sustainability, and the capstone graduate planning course. She also serves on the Executive Board of the APA-WI and the long-range planning committee for downtown Wauwatosa.
