I decided to pursue materials engineering because I am very much a detail-oriented person. It’s extremely interesting to learn about new, different materials that are being used in various industries. In my sophomore year I had the opportunity to work in a full-time co-op position at Briggs & Stratton. I completed failure analysis of broken engine components. For example, I would evaluate a crank shaft, research why it was broken, and then write a report on my findings. When I started I knew nothing about engines. My supervisor was great – he would help me if I needed it, but he also let me do the work myself, so that I really learned. Through my work I gained maturity and confidence. The company would take my reports and actually use them to benefit the company and improve projects. I also gained a different aspect of being an engineer, in addition to what I’m exposed to in class.

How I decided to pursue engineering while I was still in high school: I attended a camp that the Society of Women Engineers held to help women learn about different engineering disciplines.

Something I’m involved in outside of class: The Aeronautical and Aerospace Organization. This year we are building an airplane! It was definitely a challenge to know where to start because the project is so big. But, it’s a great learning experience. I’m considering pursuing a career in aeronautics after graduation.

An important relationship I have made at UWM: I have worked in Dr. Pradeep Rohatgi’s research lab and taken his classes. He provides so much insight and always communicates information like scholarship opportunities. I really value the rapport I’ve developed with him.
