Gideon Afolayan

I was born and raised in Nigeria and came to Milwaukee in 2001 to live with my uncle and attend college. I had always been fascinated by the concept of electricity and felt that I had a bond with fixing things, so electrical engineering seemed like the right path for me. UWM offers a great learning experience. The curriculum is comprehensive, so your requirements involve classes other than engineering.
"From the design to the end result, this is my work, this is my product.."
"I've made good friendships and professional connections that will continue into the future."

For instance, I’ve taken swimming, karate, kung fu, and I learned how to play the guitar, which is now one of my favorite hobbies. Of course, engineering is fun, too. It may sound geeky, but I really enjoy the labs. They allow you the opportunity to put to practice what you learn in class. It’s very pleasurable when everything comes together and you can say, “From the design to the end result, this is my work, this is my product.” One of my favorite labs involved designing a filter that could take a signal from a human heart beat. I have a huge desire to learn. I’m like a sponge – I take it all in.
Other activities that enhance my education: I gained professional experience through a co-op position at Milwaukee Electronics, and I’m now interning at Rockwell Automation. I’m also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers. I’ve made good friendships and professional connections that will continue into the future.
One of my favorite experiences at UWM: Through UWM’s study abroad program I was able to study in Germany. I appreciate the opportunity to broaden my horizons and study different cultures.
Advice for someone about to enter college: Be persistent in your studies, but also have fun. Know that the end result is something you can look forward to. Take pride in your work.
