Areas of Research Concentration

The Center's health and disease research is multi-faceted. Two areas of emphasis are neurobehaviorial disorders and cardiac birth defects supported by related studies of biological mechanisms of environmental disease etiology.  Besides these particular diseases, the Center's research portfolio contains a special focus on freshwater, Great Lakes environmental factors and children's diseases.  Other developmental and childhood diseases and disorders are also represented.  Integral to our ability to contribute significantly to understanding the environmental underpinnings of childhood health and disease are robust partnerships between clinicians, public health researchers, and basic scientists.  Linked to these disease-based studies is an array of basic mechanistic research related to oxidant, electrophilic, and metal stress and a strong emphasis on new methods and technology development.  A singular emphasis is our use and development of the zebrafish as a prime model organism for the study of developmentally-based diseases.
