Spain: Language, Culture and Business in Galicia

This unique program takes place in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia's enchanting capital in Northwestern Spain, a UNESCO heritage city and an ancient site of pilgrimage. Students will examine the culture of Galicia, a Celtic bridge to understanding the past and present of the Hispanic and Portuguese-speaking worlds. Culture class discussions will focus on the factors that have contributed to the making of the identity of Galicia in such areas as history, politics and society, traditions, mythology, music, and cinema. Language classes will provide either an introduction to Business and Legal Spanish or intensive oral practice in Spanish. The program also includes several weekend excursions.

Colmcille Semester
Dates: January 10 through May 2, 2009
Glencolmcille, Republic of Ireland and Derry, Northern Ireland
From medieval times to the present, Ireland has inspired writers, fascinated visitors, and beguiled the uninitiated with its captivating countryside; its wealth of usic, art, and architecture; its lifestyle and history—an ideal destination for an in-depth cultural experience! As a participant on the Colmcille Semester, you will experience the life and culture of two very different places on the Irish landscape. Coursework emphasizes Irish language and culture and Peace and Conflict Studies with additional modules in Poetry, folklore, archeology, and popular culture.
This English-speaking, semester-long study abroad program is divided into modules of varying duration between Glencolmcille—a small coastal valley community in the Donegal Highlands in the Northwest corner of the Republic of Ireland, and at the University of Ulster, Magee College, Derry—the second largest city of Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. These program sites are selected to allow for an exceptional range of study options which include opportunities for internship, fieldwork, applied history workshops and independent research. The program also includes field trips to Dublin, Sligo, and Gewwdore.
All participants partake in an intensive Irish language course at a premiere language institute in County Donegal. The majority of time is spent studying a range of topics at Magee College in Derry, side-by-side with local students. Throughout the semester students explore different aspects of Ireland's history and culture leading to four credits of Ethnic/Celtic Studies under the supervision of a UWM faculty member.

Ireland: Oideas Gael - Irish Language and Culture
Summer Semester: July 11 - August 1, 2009
Glencolmcille, County Donegal
Irish (Gaelic) is one of the longest surviving languages of Europe. It provides us with the oldest literature apart from Greek and Latin. A Celtic branch of the Indo-European tree of tongues, it is the key that unlocks the door to Irish cultural heritage. Our three week summer program takes place from July 11 to August 1, 2009 at Foras Cultúir Uladh (Ulster Cultural Institute) in Glencolmcille on the northwest side of Ireland.
This Gaeltach area of Donegal, named after St. Colm Cille, is located in the scenically splendid Sliabh Liag peninsula. The region is renowned for its wealth of traditional culture, music and prehistoric settlements, as well as excellent amenities such as the excellence of our coursework provides participants with an opportunity for social and cultural interaction with a vibrant community of diverse ages and talents.
As a participant of this program you will spend three glorious weeks exploring Irish culture and language. You will experience workshops in music, singing, drama, painting, folklore, archaeology and more. Enjoy evenings of Celtic conviviality, "Craic agua Ceol" (Music and Fun). All this while earning six UWM credits.
