Sport & Recreation

Exercise and fitness have become paramount for everyone, as noted in healthcare literature and everyday news. Sport and Recreation courses compliment many of the campus health curriculums. They also address some of the serious health concerns of the community by providing the knowledge and teaching the discipline required for a healthy lifestyle. CHS Sport and Recreation courses provide the groundwork for healthy living for thousands of UWM students and staff, and for the community at large.

Sport & Recreation courses are credit courses offered by the Outreach Office for the College of Health Sciences in conjunction with the Department of Human Movement Sciences. We also offer some select credit courses through other CHS departments. All offerings are open to UWM students, as well as the community (non-students).

Sport and Recreation Courses

Below is a list of Sport and Recreation courses with descriptions which may be taken by all UW-Milwaukee students and members of the community. Sport and Recreation courses do count toward degree credits and GPA. Students should see their advisor for any restrictions.

Enrollment in these courses can enhance students academic work by increasing physical activity and reducing stress. Sport and recreational activities are an important part of a healthy life and can result in a balanced lifestyle.

Aerobic Dance - This class will provide an overall understanding of aerobics so that the students may contribute to and enjoy the activity on their own at home or in a club setting.

Advanced Anchoring Systems - This is an intense course covering the special skills required for proper placement of protection pieces used in top rope rock climbing and rappelling. Students will learn the dos and don'ts for placement of Tri-Cams, Hexes, Wedges, Stoppers, Friends etc. as well as instruction in equalizing systems. Students will also be instructed in the use of mixed protection systems.

Advanced Open Water - The PADI Advanced Open Water course is designed for students who have completed their PADI Open Water Dive course and wish to get professionally supervised experience in areas such as deep navigation, wreck, boat, night, search and recovery, buoyancy, and multilevel diving.

Advanced Rockclimbing - The course will introduce students to systems employed in multiple pitch rockclimbing. Climbing safety will be stressed and exercised thoroughly and consistently.

Advanced Winter Camping - The goal of this course is to prepare and execute a successful camping experience in deep snow country. Gain knowledge in cold weather clothing, proper diet, extreme cold safety, using snow as an asset, fire building, and proper backpacking for snow country. Enjoy a three day camping experience with the use of snow shoes and cross country skis in Northeastern Wisconsin .

Advanced Photography - Students in this Advanced Photography class will use primarily color slide film to complete their assignments. The tolerance for exposure is more constricted than with color negative films. Success with color slide film rewards the photographer with vibrant color and sharpness when compared to color negative films. Assignments in Advanced Photography will reinforce and enhance basic principles of photography and exposure.

Advanced Rappelling - This class is designed to give students the advanced skills and information needed to successfully and safely participate in the sport of rappelling. Students will be given hands-on opportunities in the various skills and techniques of rappelling. Topics to be covered are: safety, rope and webbing, hardware, personal equipment, knots, anchor getting over, psychology, special methods, and ascending.

Adventure Sports - This class is designed to introduce students to the various locations and recreational activities that are available in the Metro Milwaukee and surrounding areas. Students will participate in various hands on activities such as kayaking, canoeing, rock-climbing, biking, and rappelling. Students will receive handouts and information on where they may receive formal instruction, clubs, associations, and programs covering these activities.

Aikido - This course will introduce the martial art of Aikido to the student. It will expose the student to the physical aspects of the art, and to theory and philosophy as well. Various aspects of the Japanese culture, so rooted in its development, are also discussed. Aikido is “meditation in motion” and focuses on smooth balanced movement in a non-competitive atmosphere. Students learn that softness, a calm mind, and harmony are valuable strengths. It is an excellent physical exercise that incorporates practical self-defense.

Archery - 1.Introduce students to the equipment used in archery. 2. Cover all aspects of safety while participating in archery. 3. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of archery (stance, draw and release). 4. Students will learn how to “Fine tune” their shooting skills. 5. Students will learn how to teach their archery skills. 6. Maintenance and building of archery equipment. 7. Competition (within the class).

Backpacking & Advanced Backpacking - Demonstrations and practical applications show you how to pack and carry equipment and supplies over a predetermined route. You will learn how to have a successful campout.

Basic Cooking Skills - This class will focus on acquiring the fundamental technical skills needed to become a cook. Along the way, as we practice chopping, blending, heating, building one skill upon the other, we'll have the opportunity to prepare and taste a wide variety of foods.

Basic Drawing - The purpose of Basic Drawing is to provide students with basic knowledge of sketching techniques and opportunity to develop skills in visualizing and sketching perspective. Students will learn basic drawing techniques, the art of shading and use of shadows. Students will also learn the importance of composition in creating an interesting work and how to develop depth and perspective.

Ballroom Dance - Dances include: Cha Cha, The Cha Cha Hustle, New York New York , The Twist, Jitterbug, Tango, Rumba, Fox Trot, Waltz, Styne Skate, and Merengue.

Basic Rockclimbing - This course will introduce the student to basic top-rope rockclimbing. It assumes that the student has no previous knowledge related to rockclimbing. Climbing safety will be stressed and exercised thoroughly and consistently. With adequate completion of “basic rockclimbing” the student will possess the knowledge and skills requisite for safe top-rope climbing.

Basketball - This course will teach basic theories of basketball as well as provide an opportunity to participate in basketball drills and games.

Beach Volleyball - Students will obtain a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of beach volleyball. Students will learn basic volleyball fundamentals: serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking, and defense.

Bicycle Maintenance - General bicycle maintenance, which can be done at home, a riding technique, rider positioning and on the road repairs will be covered.

Bicycle Road Riding - Riding technique, rider positioning and on the road repairs.

Billiards & Pool - Course will provide students with the basic pool shooting skills. Topics covered include equipment (cue) bridges, stroke, sighting, target, banking, 8-ball, and 9-ball.

Bowling I & II - Bowling I is designed to give students basic bowling skills. Topics covered include etiquette, basis form, manual scoring & equipment. Bowling II: Use of different balls and grips, spare shooting, and adapting to changing lane conditions.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a complete art and sport that integrates mind, body, and spirit represented by the three sides of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Triangle. Studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu develops all aspects of the physical qualities such as force, resistance, flexibility, coordination, agility, speed, etc. It helps one to think faster, clearer, and provides self-control, confidence, determination, and serenity.

Camp Administration & Programming - Offered in the Spring, this is an introduction to organized camping, purpose and philosophy. Acquaints participants with basic camp management skills necessary in operating a camp, involvement in role-playing to enhance management skills, exploration of various types and audiences for organized camping, familiarizes participants with camp program planning process, exposure to resources for use in camp program development, guidance in the development of a camp program for the participant's own use.

Camping Foods & Cooking Techniques - Development and application of proper outdoor menus based on nutritional needs due to weather and physical activity. If you can cook it at home-You can cook it outside.

Canoeing - Learn through demonstrations and practical application how to enjoy the outdoors and wilderness through canoeing. Lectures include techniques and whitewater technology; swamping, capsizing and recovery; dangers, rafting as a whitewater alternative and water safety practices.

Canoe Camping - Learn how to plan and pack everything necessary to enjoy a moving camp activity using canoes as a primary form of transportation.

Capoeira - Capoeira Angola is an art of the African Diaspora that originated in Angola where it was designed to teach its practitioners philosophy, self-protection, music, and meditation. The objective of the first course is to introduce students to the basic movements, rhythms and philosophy of Capoeria Angola . To further broaden the scope of the lessons, students will also have readings that relate to the discussions on particular topics.

Cardio Kickboxing - Cardio kickboxing is an aggressive workout combining punches and kicks in an interval style workout. The goal is to teach proper technique, and improve cardio-vascular and muscular systems.

Cardio Workout - To develop an understanding in basic aerobic movement and vernacular; to increase in physical stamina; to increase enjoyment through exercise applying these principles after the class session is completed.

Ceramics: Painting & Design - This course is designed to teach you how to clean green ware. You will be applying cover coat and glazes, working on staining and antiquing to create finished pieces.

Certified Pool/Spa Operator - Goals of this course is to develop knowledge of aquatic safety, chemical handling and requirements, budgeting, mechanics, and training of personnel. You will also gain knowledge of administrative responsibilities of a certified pool/spa operator.

Chess: Focus on Strategy, Focus on Tactics - These chess courses will cover all aspects of the gam: beginning the game and opening traps; middle game, both strategy and tactics and endgame. Both thematic and combination play will be examined at all levels utilizing examples from instructors and grand master games as well as other published materials. At the completion of the course, the student will play better chess.

Cooking Healthy Foods - To provide students with a basic knowledge of health food choices and preparation techniques. Instruction will include classical techniques with attention to low fat cooking principles.

Ease into Fitness - An introductory class for participants who have never taken an aerobics or fitness class, are just starting a fitness program or whowish to gradually increase their fitness levels. This course phase focuses on flexibility and toning, and also introduces the class to elements of Yoga, Stability Ball Training, Tai Chi, and other low impact methods. Basic nutrition, muscle groups, and fitness facts will be discussed.

Equipment Maintenance Specialty - This course is intended to familiarize divers with the operation and maintenance of equipment. It is not an equipment-repair course. The PADI Equipment Specialist course addresses the following: The theory, principles and operation of diving equipment, routine, recommended care and maintenance procedures, and equipment storage, common problems with equipment and recommended professional maintenance procedures (including a demonstration of repair procedures), simple suggestions for comfortable equipment configurations and an introduction to new equipment (Optional trying of new or unfamiliar equipment in confined water.)

Fitness Training: Theory and Practice I - Fitness training has been developed to offer students comprehensive learning in the five components of fitness. The student will enhance awareness and stimulate interest in effective exercise training, nutrition, program design, relaxation, and injury prevention.

Intro to Floral Design - Hands on experience in the proper care of fresh flowers, values of colors, and use of depth. Creating and working with fresh and silk flowers. Learning names of flowers and origin and how they are obtained. Experiment with styles and appropriate flowers to be used.

Floral Design: Special Occasion - Create and work with different styles of bouquets, using color and textures to meet the needs of the occasion. Making brides, maid of honor bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres. Working with fresh and silk materials. Learning the best care of the flowers along with proper techniques of handling. Learn to make bows for the designs created. There may possibly be a trip to the florist's wholesale house.

Golf - Learn the fundamentals and basic knowledge of the swing and game of golf. The student will actively participate using clubs and range balls.

Handball I & II - The class begins with basic instruction on the proper stroking of the ball with either hand. Basic strokes and strategies precede the introduction of the official rules and regulations. The class ends with a tournament run for and by the students. Each class attempts to provide a good physical workout by means of playing the game of handball.

Hiking Wisconsin State Trails - This class is designed to introduce students to many of Wisconsin 's southeastern trails. They will experience numerous trails that offer various degrees of difficulty, solitude and outstanding scenery despite their proximity to population centers. There is over a million acres of wilderness set aside for them to enjoy solely by way of hiking. It is an area of pine forests, crystal clear lakes, rolling farm fields, sandbars, islands and river bluffs. This is where deer roam the woods, while blue heron soar overhead and the ducks and geese beckon to you. These generally quiet trails serve as an excellent training ground for beginning hikers and backpackers. Students will receive basic map instruction as well as learn about the history and wildlife making up the various trails to be hiked.

Hip Hop Dance - The five fundamental elements will be covered – rhythm, timing, syncopation, form, and interpretation. Hip Hop is a style of Modern Jazz Dance. The music is the inspiration of the dance. Technique Exercises on Floor, Technique Standing Exercises, Basic Steps used in hip hop such as arabesque, fouette,, attitude, battement, sauté, Leaps – pas de bouree, passe, developee, chasse, Turns – pique, soutenue, pirouette, Combinations – starting with basic steps that could be used in free style nite club dancing continuing to more intricate steps such as hip hop walks, contractions, knee pops, body rolls, drags, butterfly, slides, ball changes, grapevine. Movements will lead to a choreographed routine.

Modern/Fad Dancing - This course will cover many styles of Urban Dance & Movements, each class has three segments- we will begin with a club style warm-up, taking the latest moves right out of the clubs and into the studio, followed by a period of specialty instruction for specific dance styles (included but not limited to Stepping and Hip Hop), and finishing with a choreographed routine.

Hustle & Hip Hop Dance - Hustle is a member of the swing family and is like the west coast swing in pattern. It has a distinct flavor and is danced to contemporary pop dance music of the last 20 years. It is a fast smooth dance with the lady spinning almost constantly while her partner dances her close and swirls her away. Hip Hop is a style of modern jazz dance. The music is the inspiration of the dance.

Hip Hop & Swing - This course will cover body exercises for limbering, balance, and arms. Basic footwork and figures of hip-hop and swing and will be covered.

Intro to Ceramics - This course is designed to teach you the basics of ceramics. You will learn how to clean greenware. You will learn to use underglaze and glaze. You will also be introduced to unfired products. Students will be given hands on instruction and application of the various skills and techniques learned.

Intro to Painting with Water Colors - The basic purpose of Introduction to Painting—Watercolor, is to provide students with basic knowledge of painting with watercolor as a medium. Students will learn basic brush techniques, the art of mixing colors, use of washes, color, and shading. Students will also learn the importance of composition in creating an interesting work, and how to develop depth and perspective.

Intro to Painting with Water Colors: Architecture - The basic purpose of Painting with Watercolor: Buildings and Landscapes is to provide students with basic knowledge of painting with watercolor as a medium. Students will learn basic brush techniques, the art of mixing colors, use of washes, color, and shading. Students will also learn the importance of composition in creating an interesting work, and how to develop depth and perspective.

Intro to Painting with Water Colors: Flowers - The basic purpose of Introduction to Painting—Watercolor is to provide students with basic knowledge of painting with watercolor as a medium. Students will learn basic brush techniques, the art of mixing colors, use of washes, color, and shading. Students will also learn the importance of composition in creating an interesting work, and how to develop depth and perspective

Intro to Painting with Water Colors: Landscapes - The basic purpose of Painting with Watercolor: Landscapes, is to provide students with basic knowledge of painting with watercolor as a medium. Students will learn basic brush techniques, the art of mixing colors, use of washes, color, and shading. Students will also learn the importance of composition in creating an interesting work, and how to develop depth and perspective.

Introduction to Rockclimbing & Natural History of Devil's Lake - This course incorporates both an introduction to technical rock climbing and an examination of geological history and biological communities of Devil's Lake State Park . There will be opportunities to ascend some historic climbing routs at the Park under the guidance of expert rock climbers of the Adventure Rock Staff.

Intro to Running - Students will participate in running activities and learn about different training techniques. Objectives of course is to learn proper learning form, learn general training techniques, understand how to develop training techniques, learn basic muscle groups involved in running, become familiar with running terminology, and learn basic safety factors involved in running.

Jazz Dance Express I & II - Dance Express I takes the elements of a dance class and puts them together as a way to obtain a healthy, safe, and creative way to work-out while encouraging self-expression. The class uses dance warm-ups, rhythmic exercises that move across the floor, modern and jazz combinations, and cool-down activities. The purpose of the class is to create a safe and physical workout that will develop a basic knowledge of a dance class and its subsequent components. Dance Express II will develop the body's coordination, agility, flexibility and posture alignment. The class will present dance and body warm-up, rhythmic exercises that move across the floor, modern and jazz combinations, and cool-down activities to equalize the body's musculature. The purpose of the class is to develop kinesthetic skills and enhance the knowledge and skills a dance class offers.

Karate I, II & III - Introduces and gives a basic understanding of the Okinawa Art of Shorin-Ryu Karate. Students will also gain a basic understanding of the philosophy of Shorin-Ryu Karate. You will learn the basic blocking, kicking, and punching skills and their application of self-defense. Each student will improve his or her own ability of body control and function in Levels 1 & II.

Kayaking - This class is designed to introduce students to the adventures of kayaking. They will experience paddling water-ways that offer solitude and outstanding scenery despite their proximity to population centers. There are over a million acres of wilderness set aside for them to enjoy solely by way of kayak. It is an area of pine forest, crystal clear lakes, rolling farm fields, sandbars, islands, and river bluffs where deer roam the woods, blue heron soar overhead and the ducks and geese beckon to you from the lake. These lakes serve as an excellent training ground for beginning kayakers. Students will receive basic kayak instruction as well as learn about the history and wildlife making up the various lakes.

Kendo - An introduction to the Japanese sport of Kendo, the 1000-year-old fencing art based on the use of the Katana (Japanese sword). The students will learn the history, philosophy, and rules of Kendo as well as the basic sport. This will include stances and posture, grip, footwork, the use of the sword and control of the internal energy. This course will cover the expected conduct of the Kendo practitioner with regard to the standards of the Kendo student etiquette. We will also examine how Kendo relates to everyday life.

Kenpo - American Kenpo is an American cross of Kung-Fu and Karate, specifically designed for self-defense. Ed Parker developed the system in Hawaii and California with the help of law-enforcement officers and military personal. The art became popular in the 1960's with the involvement of Bruce Lee, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Norris. The system is designed to put a person through so many related responses to differing threats that individual techniques blend together, allowing the persons to react based on theories of motion and kinesthetics.

Latin and Hip Hop Dance - The five fundamental elements that will be covered are rhythm, timing, syncopation, form and interpretation. Hip Hop is a style of Modern Jazz Dance. The music is the inspiration for the dance. This course is also an introduction to Latin dances. Dances that will be covered are: the Cha Cha, Ramba, Salsa, Merengue, and Tango.

Meditation - This course is an introduction to the practice and theory of meditation. Meditation is a journey into the tranquil center of your own being. The practice of meditation can be learned over time through daily practice, and there are various methods and practices which lead the meditator within. The primary focus of the course will be to learn basic practices which will allow the meditator to sit comfortably, quiet the breath, gently focus the mind inward and gradually learn to quiet the mind. Some of the sections will be taught in the tradition of Raja Yoga which is a complete system leading to a dynamic state of health and well being which includes the practice of postures, breathing and meditation.

Intro to Relaxation and Meditation - Learn the benefits of relaxation and meditation through experiencing a number of different techniques and tools. Each individual will respond differently to each of the different techniques. Learn which one works best for you while enjoying the benefits of this age-old practice.

Mind Body Awareness - An exploration of the connection between the body and the mind.

Mugs, Jugs and Crocks: Pottery on the Wheel - This class will introduce material and techniques of working with clay on the potter's wheel. Students will explore ceramic objects made by other cultures. Studio activities will include throwing functional cylinders.

Off-Road Bicycling - Riding technique, rider positioning, and on the trail repairs.

Okinawan Kobudo Weapons: Bo and Bo Sai - This course will cover fundamental techniques of the Okinawan multiweaponed area of Matayoshi Ryu Kodubo. Matayoshi Kobudo consists of techniques such as: rokushaku bo (6 foot staff), sai (fork-like iron truncheon), tonfa/tuifa/tunkua (right angle handle club), nunchaku (two small sticks connected with rope or chain), manji sai (sai with one reversed prong), nunti (bo mounted with manji sai as a spear), eku/iyeku (traditional boat oar), kama (pair of hand held farming sickles), kuwa (okinawan garden hoe), sansetsukon (three sectioned staff), suruchin (weighted chain or rocks attached to rope), and tetsuko/tekko/chizikumbo (brass knuckles and small fist sized spikes and blunt sticks).

Orienteering - This course introduces students to the sport of orienteering, familiarize students with basic use of a map (with contour lines) and compass. You will learn the objective of orienteering and basic strategies needed for successfully completing recreational orienteering activities.

Outdoor Soccer I and II - Become familiar with the rules of outdoor soccer, learn and develop the basic skills of the game, participate fully in class, and successfully compete in games or scrimmages on a regular basis.

Photography Fundamentals - This class is designed for a person with no knowledge of photography but wants to learn the fundamentals. Students will understand exposure of color negative, color slide and B & W films. Technical challenges and photographic composition will be discussed and explained.

Physical Conditioning - Designed to provide physical exercise and give students the opportunity to learn and participate in physical activity more skillfully, productively, and safely. The purpose of this course is to provide each student with the opportunity to become more skilled in the design of a personal fitness program, to gain endurance, strength, flexibility and to provide a regular cardiovascular workout.

Pilates - The Pilates method is an exercise system focused in improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk and improving core stability. The Pilates method of body conditioning promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages and physical conditions while providing a refreshing and energizing workout. In addition, this method can be used safely by pregnant women to learn proper breathing, body alignment, improving concentration, and recover body shape and tone postpartum.

Pottery Around the World - This class will introduce materials and techniques of working with clay. Students will explore ceramic objects by many cultures throughout history. Studio activities will include reproducing functional and ritual objects and constructing contemporary interpretations.

Quiet Water Canoeing - This class is designed to give students the basic skills and information needed to successfully and safely participate in quiet water canoeing. Students will be given hands-on opportunities in the various skills and techniques of canoeing. Topics to be covered are: safety, paddle strokes, personal equipment, basic map and river reading.

Racquetball I & II - Students will obtain a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of racquetball and will learn basic racquetball fundamentals.

Rappelling - This class is designed to give students the basic skills and information needed to successfully and safely participate in the sport of rappelling. Students will be given hands-on opportunities in the various skills and techniques of rappelling. Topics to be covered are: safety, rope and webbing, hardware, personal equipment, knots, anchors, edge protection, rappelling, Figure 8 descenders, anchors, getting over, psychology, special methods, and ascending.

Rescue Diver - This course is designed for divers who wish to develop accident prevention and management skills and gain confidence and self-assurance by learning how to assist other divers. By the end of this course, students will be able to recognize and correct problems in the water before they become emergency situations. The course consists of approximately 8 hours of classroom time, a written exam, open water training, and two practical application exercises where the students lead a simulated rescue operation.

Rockclimbing Conditioning - This course will introduce the student to theory and technique pertinent to conditioning for the sport of rock climbing. Areas to be covered include: coordination, psychological aspects, power, power-endurance, local endurance, flexibility, scheduling, and tactics for improving climbing performance. Climbing safety will be stressed and exercised thoroughly and consistently.

Rockclimbing: Natural History of Devil's Lake State Park - This course incorporates both an introduction to technical rock-climbing and an examination of the geologic history and biological communities of Devil's Lake State Park . There will be opportunities to ascend some historic climbing routs at the park under guidance of expert rock-climbers of the Adventure Rock staff. The park includes the most diversified assemblage of organisms in the state and we will focus on how its unique landforms create conditions that promote this diversity.

Rollerblading - The course is designed for beginner to advanced levels. Helmet and wrist guards are mandatory. Course will focus on improving inline skating skills, technique, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, and learning safety and maintenance of inline skates.

Sailing - The course introduces students to sailing on 21' keelboats of the Yingling class. The course comprises a rigging class, five on the water instruction with qualified instructors and a dryland class. After the orientational meeting, all instruction will take place at the Sailing Club at UWM dock location on the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center grounds. The rigging class introduces to the different part of the boat and teaches to raise, lower and stow the sails. During the on the water lessons, students will learn subsequently to steer the boat with confidence, come-about (turn the boat when heading toward the wind), jibe (turn the boat when heading away from the wind and then make full circles), perform the person-over-board (POB) rescue maneuvers and approach and leave docks and moorings under different wind conditions and orientations. These lessons are arranged on an individual basis with the instructor.

Self-Defense - This is an assault prevention course with a broader perspective than typical self-defense instruction. Incorporating physical and psychological training, it is a comprehensive program that develops street-smart skills and self-confidence through awareness and knowledge as preventative techniques.

Shaolin Kung Fu I, II & III - Course features an introduction to the art of Shaolin Kung Fu and traditional forms and self-defense techniques. Students will develop discipline, flexibility, mind-body coordination, and muscle tone. Shaolin Kung Fu provides the ultimate challenge in physical and mental exercise.

Skin & Scuba - This course introduces the student to scuba through academic, confined water, and open water training. During these training sessions, students will learn how to assemble, operate, and break down scuba systems. Students will also learn basic scuba skills such as: mask and regulator cleaning, emergency air management, and dive planning.

Sport Yoga - Sport yoga is a form of yoga consisting of poses and techniques drawn from Hatha Yoga, Astanga Yoga, Tai Chi, Kung-Fu, Pilates, and sports stretching. It is a structured flexibility training program for the beginning and active fitness enthusiast interested in learning a variety of warm-up methods, stretches, and poses/postures. The sport yoga system can help bring balance to weight training or aerobics programs, or become a springboard into more active lifestyle.

Sports Officiating: Basketball - This is a cognitive motor skills survey course designed to teach the student the basic principles of officiating basketball. Specifically, those skills are rules knowledge, and mechanics of both two and three person coaching at the high school level. Outside participation to practice and develop this skill as well as state certification will be offered and are recommended but not required.

Straw Weaving & Advanced Straw Weaving - Ever since the domestication of grains, human beings have manipulated it into plaits that have culturally specific meaning. In this class, students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of different plaits, design their own projects and hear some of the folklore behind the ancient craft. Students will be allowed to work at their own pace and be encouraged to pick projects that match their skill level. As we work on the projects the instructor will relate the folklore associated with the weave and any ethnographic information she has gathered about the symbolism of grains, grain-related beliefs, rituals and customs from various cultures.

Step Aerobics - Students will develop an understanding of basic aerobic movements and vernacular; increase muscle endurance and strength, develop and/or improve rhythm, flexibility, and muscle memory, and increase enjoyment of exercises. Students will also identify and understand safety and injury prevention tactics, develop basic choreography and cueing skills, and present a short aerobic routine upon completion of the course.

Swim I & II - These courses focus on improving swimming skills, stroke techniques, forms of entry, aerobic/anaerobic conditioning, and metabolic training related to heart rate and nutritional factors.

Swing & Latin Dance - Body exercises for techniques and balance. This course is an introduction to Latin Dances. Dances that will be covered are the Cha Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Merengue, Tango, and East Coast Swing will also be introduced (instead of Lambada).

Swing & Salsa Dance - This course will cover body exercises for limbering, balance, and arms. It will give a historical background of swing. Basic footwork and figures will also be covered. The word salsa means sauce denoting a hot flavor and its best distinguished from other Latin music styles by defining it as a New York sound developed by Puerto Rican musicians in New York . The dance structure is largely associated with mambo type patterns with a particular feeling and flavor.

Table Tennis - Learn rules of the game (singles and doubles), basic forehand strokes, serves with top, under, and/or sidespin, forehand and backhand loop/block. Learn proper footwork and grip. Practice against a robot. Different formats of tournaments will be presented.

Tae Kwon-Do I & II - These classes will teach students the introductory philosophies of Tae Kwon-Do, Korean terminology, various stances and techniques of Tae Kwon-Do.

T'ai Chi Ch'uan - All sessions will provide instruction in Professor Ch'eng Man Ching's Yang Style Short Form and include discussion of the underlying philosophy and principles.

Tap & Broadway Dance - The five fundamental elements will be covered- rhythm, timing, syncopation, form, and interpretation. Tap Steps: tap, heel, dig, hit, step, shuffle, scuff, chug, essence, Paradiddle, Irish, flap, ball-change, maxie-ford, buffalo, waltz, clop, cramp roll, draw back.

Tap & Hip Hop Dance - The five fundamental elements will be covered- rhythm, timing, syncopation, form and interpretation. Composing music with the Feet Warm-up entire body, arm work, tap exercise for feet. Tap steps; tap, heel, dig, hit, step, shuffle, scuff, chug, essence, Paradiddle, Irish, flap, ball change, maxie-ford, buffalo, waltz, clop, cramp roll, draw back, time steps, combinations, turns. A choreographed routine. Hip Hop is a style of modern jazz dance. The music is the inspiration of the dance.

Tap Steps: tap, heel, dig, hit, step, shuffle, scuff, chug, essence, Paradiddle, Irish, flap, ball-change, maxie-ford, buffalo, waltz, clop, cramp roll, draw back. Time Steps, Combinations, Turns. Hip-Hop is a style of modern jazz dance. The music is the inspiration of the dance. This is the latest dance that the newest divas are doing.

Tennis I & II - The main objectives of Tennis I & II are to learn the basic skills necessary to play tennis. The course will cover tennis terminology and tennis etiquette, the rules of tennis (singles and doubles), basic stroke mechanisms and footwork, basic singles and doubles strategy, proper warm-up/cool-down exercises and stretches, and other basic skills. There will be one exam, the final. The final exam will cover tennis rules and some fundamental concepts.

Theory & Practice of Coaching Competitive Swimming - This course is great for those who enjoy swimming and those who plan to coach swimming in the future. You will be instructed on the basic knowledge of swimming and good coaching ethics.

Touch Football - Become familiar with the rules of touch football. Learn and develop the basic skills and conditioning required by the game and fully participate in class. Successfully compete in a game or scrimmage on a regular basis employing the basic skills.

Underwater Photography - Students will learn camera assembly and maintenance as well as basic underwater photography techniques in this hands-on course. Students are asked to view the PADI Underwater Photography video, attend classroom sessions on underwater photography theory and techniques, and complete a total of two video dives.

Wado Ryu Karate - Focus on the forms, drills and covering the rules, regulations and techniques of international karate competitions. Will spend class time covering the requirements of obtaining rank in the system and the exercises practiced to train one interested in becoming more proficient in the art. Total there are nine basic forms in the system and three advanced forms after achieving instructor standing. Also, the system includes ten levels of kinesthic development of awareness and three stages of practices used in demonstrations. This class would cover roughly one belt level per semester, including one form, and the first level exercises and drills.

Volleyball I & II - Students will obtain a working knowledge of rules and regulations of volleyball. Students will learn basic volleyball fundamentals such as serving, blocking, hitting, setting, passing and digging.

Water Aerobics - This course focuses on learning different techniques that are used in water exercise, including interval training, strength training, noodle workouts, and use of aqua jogger belts. Other objectives are to become aerobically fit, exercise, and most of all enjoy water activities.

Weight Training I & II - In this class you will examine your eating habits, reevaluate your present program, get to know basic safety factors in the weight room, become familiar with weight training terminology, understand how a basic weight training program works, learn correct technique of selected weight training exercises, and get to know some of the basic muscle groups involved in weight training.

Weight Training with Cardio Workout - It's an intense aerobic workout combined with weight lifting to provide students with general knowledge of cardiac conditioning methods and proper weight lifting techniques.

Wellness: The Art of Conscious Living - The goal of this course is to experience life. Wellness combines mind, body, emotion and spirit. Included will be a variety of opportunities to comfortably experience the definition of self-exploration and self-discovery as we increase our consciousness. Tools such as journal usage, yoga, nutrition, relaxation, mediation, breath work, and group discussions will be included activities.

Wilderness Survival - Increase backwoods knowledge while learning to live in the wilderness with the bare essentials using your head to overcome difficult situations.

Wing Chun Kung Fu - This course is designed to teach you the explosive yet easy way to do the martial art of Wing Chun Kung Fu. Created at the famous southern Shao Lin temple, this art is most famous for producing extremely talented martial artists including the late Bruce Lee. Because the art was designed for efficiency, its emphasized positioning, taking the person's force, and using the body's natural structure over brute strength and fancy kicks are so often seen in other martial arts. This art works on reflexes to adapt to any situation, and because of this, can be done by anybody regardless of age or size.

Winter Camping - Learn through demonstrations, lectures and practical application how to be comfortable and enjoy camping with tents in Wisconsin winters. There will be a weekend campout.

Yoga I & II - Students will learn fourteen basic Hatha yoga postures taught in a gentle yet effective manner. The course includes introductory instruction in yogic breathing, relaxation and philosophy. Yoga benefits the body, mind and spirit. It is more than just a set of physical exercises. The practice of yoga enhances health and well-being. It helps to train and focus the mind, stretches and tones muscles, strengthens the spine and skeletal system, massages internal organs, releases tension and soothes the nervous system. The greatest benefits will be obtained by practicing what is learned outside of the classroom.

Yoga for Stress Management - Learn ancient yoga/health practices for managing daily stressors. Students will learn to identify signs and symptoms of stress, how anxiety manifests in the body and mind, and yoga techniques for relief. The focus will be on gentle yoga, breathing to calm the nervous system and meditation. The ancient system of Raja Yoga, a precursor to all other types of yoga dating back to 4000BC, will be explored, as well as how yoga practices evolved and were introduced into Western Culture. In this system hatha, or physical yoga will be introduced as preliminary practices to balance the body, relax the breath, stretch and tone muscles, and massage internal organ systems. All practices are meant to provide students new options for gaining inner strength and self control. Since yoga is geared toward each person's capacity, all ages and body types are invited.
