Admission & Graduation Requirements

ATEP student evaluates upper arm strength

The ATEP requires 131 credits incorporating core courses, general education requirements, emphasis courses, and free electives. Admission to the athletic training submajor is not automatic, and space is limited. The application process occurs during the fall semester, and students are admitted each January. If admitted to the athletic training submajor, students must complete the program as established for accreditation. This includes courses, degree requirements, clinical education requirements, and an internship. Upon graduation from the program, students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification Examination for the Athletic Trainer.

Application Eligibility Requirements
Students interested in applying for admittance into the ATEP must meet the following minimum requirements.

  1. Cumulative UWM GPA of 2.5 (12 credits minimum)
  2. Currently enrolled in Field Experience in Kinesiology (HMS 201) and Field Work in Kinesiology (HMS 202)
  3. Successful completion of Responding to Emergencies (HMS 310) and Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO SCI 202)
  4. Enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology II (BIO SCI 203) and Introduction to Prevention, Care, and Treatment of Athletic Injuries (HMS 312) for the Spring Semester

Clinical Education Requirements

Once admitted to the ATEP students are required to complete a clinical education component each semester for five sequential semesters. Students are assigned to an approved clinical instructor (ACI) either at UWM, or other sites in the community, and commit an average of 12 hours per week to clinical education. The clinical education takes place in the HMS 416 Competencies in Athletic Training course. Students must successfully earn a grade of B- or better in HMS 416 for five sequential semesters. Educational competencies and clinical proficiencies are evaluated each semester according to information presented in the concurrent academic courses.

Graduation Requirements

The established graduation criteria include:

  • Completion of 131 degree-credits for the B.S Kinesiology-Athletic Training degree
  • Cumulative UWM GPA of 2.5
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 for the athletic training and kinesiology professional core courses, which includes satisfying minimum grade requirements that have been established for specific courses
  • Successful completion of a 640-hour internship
