Aphasia Laboratory

Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders

Aphasia is a communication disorder caused by brain damage. It can impair a person's ability to express and understand language. Aphasia is not an impairment of intelligence. At the Aphasia Lab at UWM we conduct research to better understand the impact of a brain injury due stroke, TBI or dementia on communication skills and cognitive functions

Goals:

  • Understanding the role of attention allocation in language comprehension
  • Identifying nonlinguistic factors that might affect the performance of people with aphasia on comprehension tasks
  • Developing carefully controlled assessment tools for cognitive- linguistic functions in individuals with brain injury
  • Training future clinicians and aphasia researchers
