| This lab studies the role of Chlamydia pneumoniae in atherosclerosis. Research has shown that persistent infections with this unusual microorganism leads to increased risk for atherosclerosis. Impacts on human cells after infection are examined, with the goal of describing the cascade of events that occur. | |

 This laboratory studies the pathogenesis of Lyme borreliosis, caused by infection with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Research currently focuses on the role of T cells and B cells throughout the course of Lyme arthritis and B. burgdorferi infection. |

| This laboratory's goal is to understand the underlying mechanisms of the early events that take place during acute HIV-1 infection, which seem to impact both the severity of the disease during the chronic phase and the timing of disease progression. Better understanding of these events is needed to define the initial insults exerted by the virus against the immune system, define the mechanisms leading to the initial failures of the immune system, and define correlates of protection that can be used as prognostic and vaccine development tools. | |

 This laboratory studies the imunopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. It uses a clever mouse model to study the effects of M.S. and the role of the immune system in the progression of the disease. |

| Current research of this laboratory works with Molecular toxicology, investigating the role of toxic agents on the optic nerve, concentrating on methanol. Research has utilized a unique light treatment to partially alleviate the effects of nerve damage. The role of mitochondria in damage and recovery is of special concern. | |
