2008 Research Symposium

Each spring, the College of Health Sciences holds its annual Research Symposium highlighting current research of both graduate and undergraduate students. Graduate and undergraduate students will present their current research projects to a panel of judges comprised of faculty, administrators, and community health care professionals. Projects are evaluated based on
the potential contribution to scientific literature, clarity of purpose, research methodology, analyses, results, quality of thought and writing.

Many of the projects have previously shown merit and have been funded by intra- and extramural grants. For some students, the CHS Research Symposium is their first presentation in a string of regional, national and international presentations, and many projects are published in their respective scientific and professional journals.

CHS Assistant Professor Hong You will deliver the keynote address at this year's Symposium entitled AskHERMES: An Artificial Intelligence System that Delivers Messages to Physicians at Point of Patient Care. In Greek mythology, HERMES,is a messenger from the gods to humans, a translator and an interpreter who bridges boundaries. Funded by National Institute of Health, Dr. Yu’s research group is developing the artificial intelligent system AskHERMES to deliver messages--high-quality, patient-centric clinical research as reported in the primary medical literature--to physicians at point of patient care.

Physicians often have questions about the care of their patients and often need to consult primary
literature for the latest information in patient care. Physicians usually have limited time to browse the retrieved information. As a result, many questions raised by physicians are not answered. This will have a negative impact on the quality of patient care. AskHERMES can automatically analyze a large number of information and generate a short text, ideally, less than a few seconds, to answer questions posed by physicians.
