The Center for International Education at UW-Milwaukee offers two broad types of credit-bearing international academic study programs: the Study Abroad program and the Student Exchange program. The Student Exchange program is one in which a student from UW-Milwaukee "trades" places with a student from an exchange partner university in another country. A Study Abroad program is one in which a student from UW-Milwaukee attends a faculty-led program or studies at a university abroad with no "trading" of places happening.
Students who are recipients of the full ride Academic Achievement Leadership Award or Chancellor's Scholarship for Diversity and Leadership will be able to participate in either of these programs, but will also need to meet the following requirements.
Global Studies Degree Program
- The Study Abroad program or Student Exchange program must take place in fall or spring semester and must be a UWM sponsored program. Programs sponsored by other universities will not be covered.
- Financial support from the Academic Achievement Leadership Award or Chancellor's Scholarship for Diversity and Leadership will be limited to one semester.
- The actual cost of the Study Abroad or Student Exchange program will be determined by the UWM Sponsored Study Abroad Questionnaire as completed by the CIE Overseas Programs Office for the Department of Financial Aid.
- Available scholarship funds will be determined by the portion of the student's scholarship that covers the Cost of Attendance components for the appropriate academic year excluding room and board costs. For non-Wisconsin residents, the tuition component will be based on Wisconsin residency. This amount will be available toward the cost of the Study Abroad or Student Exchange program unless the documented cost of the Study Abroad or Student Exchange program is less than the allowable scholarship amount. In such cases, the scholarship amount will then be limited to the cost of the study abroad program.
- A student may take out loans to supplement the cost of a Study Abroad or Student Exchange program. Wisconsin residents only can also explore eligibility for the Wisconsin Grant for Study Abroad.
- Each student who wishes to participate in a Study Abroad or Student Exchange program will need to work with the scholarship program staff regarding their specific situation.
- Arrangements will be made to secure housing and employment for a student upon their return.
- A student is encouraged to inquire about summer employment to help offset expenses while participating in a Study Abroad or Student Exchange program.
All Other Majors
- If a student is not a Global Studies major they will still be allowed to participate in one Study Abroad or Student Exchange program.
- The Study Abroad program or Student Exchange program must take place in fall or spring semester and must be a UWM sponsored program. Programs sponsored by other universities will not be covered.

The scholarship committee will need a copy of the academic plan that shows they are on track to graduate in eight semesters which includes the Study Abroad or Student Exchange program.
